Harmony Day –

This Sunday (21st March) is Harmony Day across Australia. With the separation and alienation caused by the COVID-19 lockdowns, and other events that have happened recently in the world, the 2021 Harmony Day theme of ‘everybody belongs’ could not be more important.

At Brunswick North West Primary School, we aspire to create an environment and live as a community that embodies the concept of ‘everybody belongs’. We have made a commitment to actively practice skills and strategies that contribute to and help to evolve this concept, and sometimes we may even need to intentionally and consciously hold others to account in order to maintain the ‘everybody belongs’ community that we are all so proud of.

There are some beautiful picture story books that families can read together to prompt a discussion and celebration of living in a harmonious community. These include;

‘Whoever You Are’ by  Mem Fox

‘Wide Big World’ by Maxine Beneba Clarke

‘Hello!’ by Tony Flowers

‘I’m Australian Too’ by Mem Fox and Leslie Staub

Writer’s Notebook

It’s time for everyone to get out their writer’s notebooks. For today’s entry, we ask that you find a double blank page and trace around your hand. Without too much thought or analysis, quickly write down four things that you really like on each of the fingers. On the thumb, write something that you don’t like.

Set the timer for ten minutes, and write in a bit more detail about one of the things (liked or not liked!) that you have written down. Use the time to expand on your idea … maybe a brainstorm or a stream of consciousness would be a good idea.

Once the ten minutes is up, put down your pencil or pen and read over your writing. Share it if you like!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
