English

During Reading in Term 2, our Grade 4 learners will learn about inferring. Students will learn about the differences between inferring and predicting, how to use clues within different text-types to support their inferences, and how to infer the causes and effects of characters' actions. Students will also learn how to visualise and create mental images of characters and events within texts.

In Writing, students in Grade 4 will continue to use their Writer’s Notebooks to explore their personal writing interests. Following on, students will learn how to write convincing and well-structured persuasive texts as the major text-type for the term. Students will learn about the structure of a convincing persuasive text and different persuasive techniques, for example emotive language, facts, statistics and repetition. Students will also learn about advertisements and how images and details can be used to extend key ideas. Students will create well structure text to explain ideas for different audiences.

 Mathematics

In Mathematics, our Grade 4 learners will begin Term 2 with an exploration of angles. Students will learn how to compare angles as being larger, smaller or equal to right angles, and measure them using informal and formal measuring tools. Time will be spent later in term around how to measure capacity, mass and length using informal and formal measuring tools as well.

Our major focus for Term 2 will be on Addition and Subtraction. Students will explore various strategies for adding and subtracting numbers of up to four digits, and choosing which method they find most useful and efficient. Students will apply these skills through real-world problems, including the use of money.

All  students will also be involved in a Counting Communities where they will have opportunities to practise their counting goals in collaboration with others. A busy but productive term ahead in Mathematics!

Inquiry

During Inquiry this term, our Grade 4 learners will be exploring a new topic, titled ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World.’ The key understanding for this unit is: ’Rules and laws are essential in keeping citizens safe and allowing them to be a part of an effective community.’

Students will build their knowledge and understandings on why laws and rules are necessary in keeping our communities safe. Our Grade 4 students will be given opportunities to deepen their thinking and learn about how rules and regulations shape the world in which they live.

Students will demonstrate their success with ’Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ by creating their own board game. Students will be given opportunities to learn what it means to be a creative, curious and adaptive twenty-first century designer in the creation of their community space.

ART: Moving into Term 2, the grade 3 & 4 students will be continuing with colour theory. The students will complete their complementary colour activity, and are learning to enhance their artwork using opposite colours together that ‘POP’ when used together. The students will then learn more about colour theory by experimenting with acrylic paint to create tints and shades and will then create a design using warm and cool colours. We will also be working with ‘lines’, this term to understand the important part that they play in art movements, such as Anime drawing, Zentangle art - inspired by Piet Mondrian and 3 dimensional line drawing. Grade 3/4 will be learning about the different types of lines and how to apply them to their artwork to create wonderful designs. Drawing with lines is fundamental to learning about Art and is the basis to all drawing; it also helps to improve fine motor skills. I look forward to a fun and creative time with the grade 3/4 students this term.

LOTE: Welcome back to a new term! In term two, the grade threes and fours will be developing their language skills in Chinese Mandarin, including listening and speaking and recognising words in Pinyin. They will learn about some Chinese festivals such as the Tomb Sweeping Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival. They will be learning new vocabulary focused on topics such as clothing and verbs. This term, students will explore facts and myths about the Terra Cotta Warriors. They will be involved in actions games, songs, books, arts and crafts as they study the new topics. The grade three to four students will be integrating technology in their lessons by using their iPads to complete tasks and research given topics.0

PE: Welcome back to another jam-packed term for grades 3 & 4 Physical Education. This term we will be having a major focus on athletics towards the later stages of the term and we will be discussing the importance of keeping physically active and the impact it has on ourselves and those around us. We will also be learning about the game of soccer through skills and background knowledge of the sport such as where it originated from, rules etc. After this we will move onto ultimate frisbee where students will be experimenting many different tactics and techniques when playing frisbee. Looking forward to having a lot of fun with grades 3 & 4 this term!

SCIENCE: I would like to welcome back the Grade 4’s to STEM for this Term. In Term 2, students will be focusing on the science area of Earth and Space. Students will learn that the Earth’s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes (weathering) and human actions. Students will also investigate different soil and rock types and conduct experiments to discover their different characteristics, ultimately leading to their classification.

In addition, the students will look at the engineering design process and how products move from ideas to design to production, which involves some interesting projects and activities.
