Reading

During Term 2, students will be learning to identify literal and implied meaning to connect ideas in a text. This is the reading skill known as inferring whereby prior knowledge and evidence from the text is joined to draw a conclusion about the text or a character. Students will use sentence stems to help them justify their thinking. They will beexposed to a variety of quality mentor texts to help them learn to infer characters' traits, feelings and motivations by focussing on the character’s actions, descriptions, what they do or say (dialogue), and what others think about them. Students will be taught how to infer the big idea or message in a text. There will also be a focus on vocabulary using the Frayer Model, phonological awareness, fluency and other comprehension skills that we use on a daily basis such as making connections, predicting and summarising. Leading up to Week 4, we will be preparing students to be ready for NAPLAN in May by learning test-wise skills and strategies.

Writing

In writing this term students will be learning how to write a narrative with a clear problem and solution. They will learn how to use simple paragraphs and develop the characters, setting, problem and solution in their narrative, and understand that the purpose of a narrative is to entertain, The second half of the term will see students introduced to poetry and the structure of haiku, cinquain, free verse and tanka poems. Students will be taught how to use poetic devices such as personification, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, imagery, repetition and alliteration. They will be learning how to incorporate nouns, adjectives and verbs in to their poetry to create coherence and to add details to their texts to make their writing more interesting.

 Mathematics

Mathematics in Term 2 is very busy with a variety ofmathematical concepts being taught – addition and subtraction, angles, 2D shape, area, mass and money. Students will engage in 6 hours of maths each week which includes counting communities, warm-ups, independent practice of the concepts and skills, and problem-solving. They will learndifferent strategies to help them create, compare and check addition and subtraction facts by showing part-part-whole for two-digit numbers, thus understanding the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will identify angles as measures of turn and compare angle sizes in everydaysituations as well as measure, order and compare objects using familiar metric units of area and mass. They will learn todescribe the similarities and differences between 2D shapes by identifying their features e.g. faces, corners, edges, angles.

Inquiry

During Inquiry this term, our Grade 3 learners will be exploring a new topic, titled ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World.’ The key understanding for this unit is: ’Rules and laws are essential in keeping citizens safe and allowing them to be a part of an effective community.’

Students will build their knowledge and understandings on why laws and rules are necessary in keeping our communities safe and fair. Our Grade 3 students will be given opportunities to deepen their thinking and learn about how rules and regulations shape the world in which they live.

For their assessment piece, students will create a board game based on an island community.  Students will create laws for their community and rules for their game.

Welcome back Grade 3 students and families! We hope you had a restful break and were able to relax and rejuvenate. We are veryexcited to be continuing your educational journey with you this term.

ART: Moving into Term 2, the grade 3 & 4 students will be continuing with colour theory. The students will complete their complementary colour activity, and are learning to enhance their artwork using opposite colours together that ‘POP’ when used together. The students will then learn more about colour theory by experimenting with acrylic paint to create tints and shades and will then create a design using warm and cool colours. We will also be working with ‘lines’, this term to understand the important part that they play in art movements, such as Anime drawing, Zentangle art - inspired by Piet Mondrian and 3 dimensional line drawing. Grade 3/4 will be learning about the different types of lines and how to apply them to their artwork to create wonderful designs. Drawing with lines is fundamental to learning about Art and is the basis to all drawing; it also helps to improve fine motor skills. I look forward to a fun and creative time with the grade 3/4 students this term.

LOTE: Welcome back to a new term! In term two, the grade threes and fours will be developing their language skills in Chinese Mandarin, including listening and speaking and recognising words in Pinyin. They will learn about some Chinese festivals such as the Tomb Sweeping Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival. They will be learning new vocabulary focused on topics such as clothing and verbs. This term, students will explore facts and myths about the Terra Cotta Warriors. They will be involved in actions games, songs, books, arts and crafts as they study the new topics. The grade three to four students will be integrating technology in their lessons by using their iPads to complete tasks and research given topics.

This term we will be having a major focus on athletics towards the later stages of the term and we will be discussing the importance of keeping physically active and the impact it has on ourselves and those around us. We will also be learning about the game of soccer through skills and background knowledge of the sport such as where it originated from, rules etc. After this we will move onto ultimate frisbee where students will be experimenting many different tactics and techniques when playing frisbee. Looking forward to having a lot of fun with grades 3 & 4 this term!

SCIENCE: I would like to welcome back the Grade 4’s to STEM for this Term. In Term 2, students will be focusing on the science area of Earth and Space. Students will learn shadows and how the Earth’s rotation causes changes such as night and day. Additionally, students will compare the relative sizes of the Sun, Earth, and Moon and investigate why the Sun looks the same size as the Moon when viewed from Earth. In addition students will look at the engineering design process and how products move from ideas to design to production, which involves some interesting projects and activities.
