Classroom News - Year 6

Mr Garraud & Mrs Walters

English

We recently completed our end of term Cold Write. It was encouraging to see students working to incorporate aspects of narrative that we have been working on in class over the past 10 weeks. The quality of openers being used to maintain an audience's interest has shown significant improvement.

This week students are working to publish one of the Big Writes they have written this term which we will put into a compendium of our writing for the term.

Maths

We enjoyed using technology and our skills in Powerpoint to manipulate objects to show our understanding of transformations of 2D shapes. We had a great time completing each other's quizzes that we had made!

History

The students have explored the structure of the Government and how bills are passed as laws this week. We completely rearranged the classroom to reflect the seating of the House of Representatives, and then role-played passing a bill proposing 'No Homework'. We sadly report that the bill was actually passed in Year 6 parliament with the help of some strong arguments from the Minister for Education and the Minister for Kentucky!

Religion

The students are busy preparing for the Stations of Cross reflection to be held on Thursday. We are privileged to be able to create the freeze frames for the school community to view as we prayerfully reflect.

We will conclude our Lent in the coming days with the students making some strong connections between the people who are oppressed in our time and how we as believers can walk as Jesus did to bring about his mission.

On Tuesday Year 6 was invited to attend the Chrism Mass a part of an Armidale Diocesan Church celebration. The Chrism Mass is conducted on the Tuesday in Holy Week every year by the bishop and joined by the priests of the diocese gathering at the Cathedral.

The students were able to witness Bishop Kennedy bless the three oils that are used in the Sacraments for the coming year. This is significant, and beautiful, for our students as they will be the recipients of the Oil of Chrism at their sacrament of Confirmation in a few months.

PE

The students have enjoyed a variety of drills and modified games exploring the concept of 'net games'. More recently, we have completed sport by rotating through 3 sets of skills based on movements required for court and net games. Students had to work quickly to resolve game sense, refine movement patterns and use teamwork skills. We even managed to get some Maths into our PE drills - reflecting, rotating, and translating our running!

Term 1 comes to a close...

Proudly, we reflect on the progress, the growth, and the achievements that your children have made over this term. As teachers, we are thrilled with the learning and fun moments that we have had with our fabulous students. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and we look forward to resuming some more hard work by us (and your child!) in Term 2.

We also wish you a restful and blessed holiday break, Easter holiday, and downtime with those who you love.
