Classroom News - Year 3

Mrs Johnson/Mrs  Newsome and Miss Archibald

We have almost reached the end of what has been a very busy and exciting term in Year 3!

Religion

This week we concluded our Term One Lenten Unit. The Students now have a good understanding of the Holy week events and their significance. Year 3 have been reflecting on the three practices of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving during this special Season in the Church.

English

Since the beginning of the year in English, we have studied several different narrative texts and have practised reading comprehension strategies of predicting, making connections with the text, questioning, summarising and visualising. Visualising was a favourite strategy to explore, with students thoroughly enjoying the chance to draw what they imagined whilst listening to or reading a story. Year 3 have also enjoyed composing several pieces of writing this term on a range of topics, both imaginative and persuasive.

Science

During Science this term, we explored the different materials used to create objects and clothing in our world, and the reasons that engineers and designers may choose those materials. Students considered the properties of a range of materials, both man made and natural. On Monday afternoon our students participated in a STEM Challenge. In small groups the students enjoyed designing and creating their own item of clothing or accessory using recycled classroom materials. After creation the students presented their garment to the class and explain their choices of materials and design. The children were very engaged and enjoyed this design and make task.

Naplan

Last week, Year 3 participated in a practise NAPLAN test, using the online platform which will be used for the real test next term. This test was a combination of Reading and Numeracy questions, to expose students to the style of questions they will find in the actual assessment. The students did extremely well navigating the online system on their Chromebooks and followed instructions without delay. We have no doubt that they will do their best in their Reading, Numeracy and Writing assessments next term in Week 4.

Happy Holidays

Miss Archibald, Mrs Newsome and Mrs Johnson would like to to wish all of our Year 3 students and families a Holy, happy and safe Easter break and we look forward to an exciting Term Two.
