Grade 2/3

Parent Reading Program

Thank you so much to Nick, Andy, Megan, Rhiannon, Mike, Lizzie, Janya, Beth, Lucy, Corinne, Trish, Nat, Jenny, Jane and Nerida for their awesome efforts in reading with the 2/3 students so far this term.  We know the students have really enjoyed having one on one time with you all to exhibit their growing reading skills! If your scheduled time no longer suits or you are not signed up but interested in dedicating some time to come in and read with the 23s , let your child's teacher know. A huge thanks to Trish and Brydie for also sorting, labeling and sticker-ing our brand new take home readers!!! The take home readers program will begin this term. Students will given leveled readers to take home. More information to come. This will be in addition to the use of Bug Club (English) and Kids A-Z/Raz-kids (Spanish) online readers.

Reading logs

A reminder that we encourage students to use the reading logs at home to record the books that they read, from Bug Club, library, home or Reading A-Z. Every Monday the teachers will mark reading logs so please remember to pack them in bags Sunday night ready to bring on 23 specialist day, Mondays. We recommend reading for at least 15-30 minutes every day. Muchas gracias avid readers!

¿Mi casa es tu casa?

Is mi casa always tu casa?! That is the question...and our Inquiry topic for Term 2!! Students have been exploring living, non-living and once-living things and their habitats in Inquiry this term. We have investigated habitats including rainforests, mountains, oceans, deserts and artic, and the living, non-living and once-living things found in these places. Students have found similarities in living things by grouping  animals based on characteristics, colour, fur/feathers/skin/scales, warm vs cold blooded, land/water/air, habitats and diet. They have been looking at different animal classifications and identifying what makes an animal a mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish. We will be researching further into specific adaptations that animals and plants need in order to survive in different habitats around the world. Our excursion to La Trobe Sanctuary in Week 8 will extend students' growing knowledge and understanding in this subject. Students can expect to participate in workshops on the excursion such as: linking life cycles, nesting box game, wilderness wander, what's in the water and traverse a tussock to name a few.

3D Printing & Robotics Fun

This term we have been exploring the world of 3D Printing and Robotics during Maths Builders on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We have two brand new 3D printers in the 23 area and have been using the program Tinkercad to create 3D name tags to be printed to use as a bag tag. Students have explored mathematical concepts such as length, area, 3D objects, volume, capacity, problem-solving, location, units of measurement and angles. Students have also participated in creating a car that can drive by itself in a robotics mathematics challenge  We have been so impressed by the creativity, design-thinking and application of mathematical thinking students have shown when using these programs.

Literacy/Literatura

We have been learning to make inferences in Reading/Lectura and write persuasive texts in Writing/Escritura. Students have been making inferences based on clues found within a text and image. Students have been creating Persuasive Texts on which sport should be a non-negotiable in The Olympics, why dogs or cats make the better pet, and why it is important that kids play sport. During Writing we follow the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Using our Writer's notebooks, students have been paying attention to following the writing process and focusing on making a piece of writing the best it can be!
