Division One Women Girls' Hockey

The A Grade Strikers were back to their best form on Friday night defeating Coleraine Red 5-0. Young Milly Howells and Natalie Featherston both filled in and certainly held their own. Grace Austin had a wonderful game up forward scoring three excellent goals and she was well supported by Maddi Mutch, Nina Pern and Phoebe Russell. Ruby Cush was very solid across the half line and it was certainly good to have “The Rock” Chloe Russell back in the side. The girls meet Coleraine Black in the final round on Friday night. This will be a preview of the first final where these two sides will clash again.

B Grade Blades should be very proud of their performance against Demons only going down 3-0. Tyler Butcher was an excellent inclusion on the back line and worked very well with mum Chantelle. Kate Jessop and Jemima Bishop-Mowatt worked tirelessly in the mid field and Claire Cumming as goalie was once again in the better players.

B Grade Scorchers kept their hopes of a double chance alive with a brave 1-0 win over Monivae.  Under care taker coach James Russell, the girls played an excellent team game with Jordy Brown and Jorja Hermon both leading from the front. With a number of girls just off the stage from Beauty and the Beast (including manager Mrs Hermon) this was a particularly good win.

Under 16 and Men's Hockey

College Blue tangled with College Red in the first Under 16 game last Saturday.  As would be expected, this was a keenly fought match and the first half, in particular, was very even.  Blue ended up winning 3-0 but both teams were left to rue missed opportunities.  Nonetheless, there was plenty of endeavour evident and each team looked good when they worked to pass the ball to players in space.  Harry Austin, Jack Wall and Jake Andersen scored the goals and Lucy Roberts, Jack Austin and Luke Marshall were impressive for Blue.  Gold were well served by Eren Zehir, Ciaran Nelson and Matt Spence.  It looks likely that these teams will clash again in the first final on Saturday week.

College Gold recorded a fine 7-1 win over Monivae, despite being short a couple of players.  Rather than let this affect them, the team used their situation to advantage, working together and running into the spaces created by the fewer numbers on field.  Senior players Euan Sutherland (3) and Clancy Munro scored goals and the Butcher brothers, Tyler (2) and Jake, also found the net.  This was an excellent team performance with Hamish Jeffery, Millie Howells and Jorja Hermon catching the eye as strong players.  Gold is playing with poise and crispness and looks set to feature well in the finals.

The Open team was also a little short of regulars – university Open Days are, unfortunately, not scheduled around hockey fixtures! – when they played Demons on Sunday.  Euan Sutherland and Tobe Adamson both stepped up from Under 16s and we cobbled together a team – and, in icy conditions, scored a fine 4-0 victory to seal the double chance.  Captain Reagan Simons was again dominant and Ralph Carolan provided strong support at centre half.  Reagan scored two of our goals and Ferg Roberts and Lachie Armstrong added the others in an excellent team display.  James Sutherland copped a nasty knock from a swinging stick and we were glad that the Beast was done with the night before!

It was a good weekend for College hockey.
