Senior Years and Wellbeing
Thursday 12 September is R U OK? Day – a day when we’re reminded to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs.
At The Hamilton and Alexandra College, we know that regular meaningful conversations can make a difference. You don’t have to be an expert to ask how someone’s going. Just a great mate and a good listener.
This year in the build-up to R U OK? Day we’re shining a light on the times we should be asking our friends and loved ones this important question. We want everyone in our school community to know that if something’s up with someone you know – there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying – it’s time to trust that gut instinct and ask them “Are you OK?”
R U OK? is a national charity dedicated to inspiring all of us to have regular, meaningful conversations to support anyone struggling with life.
You can learn more about the signs and how to ask R U OK? at www.ruok.org.au
To spread this message, we’ll be encouraging students to embrace the R U OK? Day colour of yellow on casual dress day- Friday 30th August (end of Wellness Week). This could be a yellow costume, yellow clothing/ hat – be creative! There will be prizes for people who embrace the theme and are dressed in yellow.
As always, if any students are finding that they would like someone to talk to at school there is always their Mentor, Head of House, Mrs Winter Cooke, Miss Waldron or our Student Counsellor Ms Couchman is available for a confidential discussion and can assist with your concerns and questions. Ms Couchman can be emailed or you can talk to her in person.
Here is a video explaining more about R U OK? Day and some of the signs that someone might not be ok.

During the week beginning Monday 26th August the SRC has organised a “Wellness Week.” Each lunchtime throughout this week activities will run to encourage students to think about their mental health and to encourage positive engagement between students of all year levels.
The week will conclude with College Has Got Talent on Friday 30th August at 7:00pm. It will be a fun night of entertainment with all funds supporting a charity of the winner’s choice. Tickets are now on sale and will be available at the door on the night.
