Year Five Classes - 2020

Last Thursday, the School Board endorsed two Year Five classes for 2020.  This is exciting news for our current Year Four families.  Next year, the Year Five classes will be housed in the classrooms currently occupied by our Year Six students.  Bifold doors can be opened to allow for plenty of team teaching and inter-class activity in this space.  The Year Six class will occupy the current Year Five classroom.  This allows us to retain the Handbury Centre as an ‘Upper Years’ area.  For Orientation Day, the current Year Four students will be placed in House groupings for the day (Berry/Laidlaw and Learmonth/Young).  These will not be the 2020 class groupings.  Class lists will be made available to 2020 Year Five parents in the new year.

Orientation Day

Next Thursday, November 14th is Orientation Day.  Students will move up to their 2020 year levels and classrooms. They will spend the day meeting their teacher and welcoming new students to the Junior School. The P.E. timetable will remain the same, so the current Piccino, Prep, Year One and Year Three classes will need to wear their P.E. uniform.  An Assembly will be held at 2.30 pm in the Refectory.  Parents are most welcome to attend.  Our Year Six students will spend the day orientating themselves to the Year Seven programme at the Senior Campus.

Art Exhibition

This week we opened our 2019 Art Exhibition - ‘The Zoo.’  Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Addinsall and Mrs. Bec Cameron for the time, effort and expertise you have both put into the student programmes over the course of 2019.  The exhibition looks amazing and it was wonderful to have visiting grandparents tour the gallery with their grandchildren.

‘The Zoo’

The Piccino, Prep and Year One students have been working with a variety of art forms and techniques such as: painting to create texture and pattern, decoupage, sculpture, watercolour, coloured pencil, printmaking and using crayon. Each of these techniques have been assembled to create a three-dimensional zoo.

The Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 students have designed and created ceramic animals, using techniques such as hand building, pinching, coil construction and slab construction. After being left to become bone dry, the ceramic animals were put in the kiln to be bisque fired. They were then glazed before returning to the kiln for a second firing. Students also worked collaboratively with peers to construct a diorama. They thought carefully about what habitat would suit animals and the students chose materials carefully.

Students were invited to participate in the ‘Artist in Residence’ programme run by Mrs Addinsall. All students were given the opportunity to register their interest to join in the programme. Sessions were offered once a week during lunchtime and after school and different students attended each term. The programme involved students designing quirky and imaginative animals and birds. The students spent a long time designing, drawing and painting their prototypes to ensure that the design and colours were complimentary. The murals, which will be located in the Reggio Piazza area were created by Year 6 students and those who attended the lunchtime and after school ‘Artist in Residence’ sessions.

Young House is running a ‘Crazy Hair Day’ fundraiser for our Uniting Church Stationery Drive.

It will be on Tuesday 12th November. A gold coin donation will help us to buy some pencil cases for pens and pencils we have already collected.  All you have to do is make your hair crazy and wear casual clothes. If hair spray/colour is involved can you please ensure it is washed out by the next day. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Support Young House and those who are not quite as fortunate as us, to start their 2020 school year with some basic school supplies.

Thank you. Emma Donovan and George Huf
