Electives 7-10
Soccer 2018
Once again we are heading into 2019 with a new line up of Electives for students in Years 7-10.
We will be presenting the choices on Thursday 31 January during our new time slot 11.35 - 1.05. After a brief presentation we will be welcoming our guest speaker Nick Pearce. Nick is the CEO & Co-Founder of HoMie, a streetwear clothing social enterprise that launched in 2015. HoMie uses 100% of its profits to support young people experiencing homelessness or hardship.
Since 2015 Nick has helped take the brand from a pop-up idea between three friends, to a bricks and mortar retail store that also acts as a base for HoMie’s Pathway Alliance Program - an initiative that sees young people experiencing hardship participate in training, where they gain on-the-job experience and accredited learning. Nick was awarded the 2017 Victorian Young Achiever Award for Leadership and 2018 National Retail Association's Young Retailer of the Year.
We look forward to hearing about his experience.
See below for a brief description about what is on offer.
In this elective students will participate in a variety of improvisation games to assist in developing their drama skills. Each class is structured similar to a “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” show. A sample list of activities would be Film Styles, Fixed Emotions, House Party and Mission Improbable. The list of options is endless, maybe even come up with a few of your own. No experience necessary.
Do you want to develop your woodworking skills and create something with your own two hands? Have you always wanted to know how to use tools but don’t have access to them? In this elective you will be inducted in the safe use of a variety of tools, depending on the project you choose and the tools you will need. Your project can be selected from a variety of plans or you can create your own!
Preshil students were finalists at Wool4School in 2015! Are you interested in learning about fashion illustration and design? You will be guided through the design process to create a design that meets the requirements of a design brief. This year the Wool4School competition invites students to design a garment or outfit that embraces the use of technology to enhance garment performance or function, such as wool footwear that tracks your run, or a credit card chip in a jacket for ease of purchase. Everyone welcome!
If you are interested in this year's Wool4Schools 'Technology Theme' to enhance garment performance then this elective might be for you. Learn the art of programming, electronics and soldering in a fun way to get to know technology and what actually underpins modern society, allowing your creative brain to dream up those new ideas from making Musicand Artto Fashion Design. Everyone Welcome!
The Model United Nations, or MUN, is a great chance to learn about how to argue, listen and engage with globally significant issues. At the beginning of the elective, each of you will be given a country for which you will be the United Nations delegate. You will need to research your country’s position on global issues and engage in discussion with other nations’ delegates about those issues.
Discover activities that you may have never experienced or thought about to stay fit and healthy. Throughout this elective you may participate in activities such as rock climbing, belly dancing, orienteering, boxing, swimming, Zumba, tai chi, crossfit and many more. The class will be fun, inclusive and appropriate for any fitness level.
It is considered one of the most enjoyable musical styles in the world for the flavour with which its dancers move their hips and feet to create artistic figures. Get involved and be part of a new experience. You are invited to learn to dance salsa, learn a new style of music, share culture and community with our Colombian instructor. No prior dancing experience is necessary; we start with the basic steps and from there you can work with the instructor to develop new choreography.
This year we welcome back Shede from Kickstart training. An ex-international athlete, Shede is a fully qualified personal trainer and played for the Kenyan national football team. Students will continue exploring the practical and theoretical aspects of the world game with a focus on formation, passing and ball control skills, positioning and goal scoring.
This term Kitchen Garden will work in cooperation with The Food Security Network to plant and grow a crop for donation. Last year we delivered a huge healthy crop to FareShare in Abbotsford. Each week we will aim to cook a shared lunch and work for a time in the garden to nurture our crops. The program provides an opportunity for students to work in genuine partnership with the community sector, to deliver a real product, value their contribution and integrate learning about health, environment and community.
This elective introduces students to important information about careers and pathways. There will be information about universities, TAFEs and alternative tertiary education providers, the selection of tertiary study places, work opportunities, and other ideas about a student’s pathway in the coming years. This may include workshops and guest speakers from industry, Interviewing skills, how to unpack a job ad, identifying your transferable skills, interests and abilities and where to find reliable information. It is essential our students are well informed and equipped for employment, as well as developing the skills and tools necessary for job seeking success.
