The task of loving

By Kelle Scott (Administration)

I was in a store earlier this year and an older lady and her frailer looking husband were standing in the line in front of me, the register was piled high in mens pajamas and toiletries. I heard her explain to the cashier that they were stocking up because her husband was about to go into respite care as she could no longer take care of him. I felt her pain as I watched the sweet old lady carefully fold her receipt and place it in her purse, her husband gazing out of the store window seemingly unaware of where he was.. and God spoke to my heart “love now”.

After obvious decades of life together, it was not death that would separate them, but the fact that one was too fragile to care for the other. My heart broke for all the moments that we take for granted, not just with our spouses, but with our parents, siblings, extended family, children and friends.

Many of us are now distinctly feeling the effects of being separated from people we love. You may yourself have come to the realization that you have taken some things in life for granted.

Let us be reminded in this strange season that we can not afford to just let this time slip past without being intentional with loving those in our lives (even if we may not be physically able to be with them right now).

If we are not intentional now, in the end we will surely have the regret of wasted time.

God, help us to remember that life is precious and short and we have the task of loving to do!

In Psalm 90:12 it says "so teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom".

May God give us hearts of wisdom, hearts that know His unfailing love for us, hearts that understand the frailty of life but more importantly the hope of eternity - hearts that are able to show love unsparingly to those He has given to us.
