Year Three

Dear Year Three Families,

The students have begun Term 3 with enthusiasm and a readiness to continue their learning journeys. The teachers have been extremely proud of how principled the students' behaviour and willingness to extend their learning since returning from the holidays.

Ambulance Incursion

During the last week of Term 2, the Year Three students attended an Ambulance Incursion as part of their Unit of Inquiry based around healthcare systems. An Ambulance Victoria Worker came to the school to discuss the roles and responsibilities of Paramedics with the

students. The students enjoyed this incursion which was a rich and engaging learning experience.

Reading

In Reading this fortnight,  students have been looking at how to analyse the author’s craft in a fiction text to understand how they engage the audience. They have made text connections to 'self', 'text' and 'world'. The students refreshed their understanding of these concepts through working in pairs and then broke off to work independently, identifying the particular crafts an author has used to engage the audience. For example; Personification was used throughout the text "The Day The Crayons Quit".  The author gave non human things (crayons) human emotions and actions.

Writing

In Writing this fortnight,  students have begun the term with consolidating their knowledge of Explanation texts. They have explored creating an Explanation text demonstrating why or how something works using a picture prompt such as the Water Cycle.

The students were encouraged to use the technical words and more detailed parts of the picture. For example, infiltration and percolation.

Below is an example of the task completed by Aadya (From 3B).

Mathematics

In Mathematics this fortnight, the students have been solving problems by using the vertical multiplication strategy and exploring different strategies to solve division problems. They began by making connections between multiplication and division, moving on to vertical multiplication and short division problems.

The students  have also explored how fractions can be represented through shapes to see their purpose in the real world. Examples of this exploration were when students discussed concepts that related to their life experiences such as;  sharing a pizza between the members of their family, cutting a cake for their birthday to share with their guests and dividing people into equal teams.

Inquiry

At the end of Term Two, the Year Three students began their third Unit of Inquiry, which related to the Paramedic Incursion. This Inquiry came under the Transdisciplinary Theme, 'How We Organise Ourselves'. The Central Idea for this unit is, 'Effective healthcare systems prioritise community welfare and wellness'. The students began the Inquiry process through unpacking key words and understanding their meaning. They have explored different professions within the healthcare system both globally and locally, sorted healthy foods from unhealthy foods and have specified certain food categories and where they come from; eg, proteins, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. The students have identified reasons why we should call triple zero and have shown their understanding of the difference between 'my dad has fainted and wont respond', to 'I cant turn on my heater' (understanding what is and isn't an emergency).
