Year Five

Dear Year 5 families,

Welcome back to Term 3! We cannot believe how fast the year is passing by. It's been a big 2 weeks back; unpacking our fourth Unit of Inquiry and of course, Camp Kangaroobie!

Unit of Inquiry

Our students began the term with a provocation regarding various types of technology and their advancements throughout the year. This term, the students will be researching different inventors and their inventions, and how their idea has progressed over time.

Writing

In Writing, students have begun focus to on information reports. They are exploring the different structures of an information report, how they can be presented and their benefits. This term, students will be researching and creating their own information report on a topic of their choice.

Reading

In Reading, students are focusing on skimming and scanning to look for important information regarding a particular topic. To link in with writing, students are exploring a range of non-fiction texts to gain understanding and knowledge of structure and content. Students are completing different comprehension tasks to support their findings and support their learning.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students are now focusing on Money and Financial Mathematics. We are currently exploring the different values and ways money can be represented. Students will be using the four operations to solve various real-world problems as well as interpreting budgets and discounts.

Camp Kangaroobie

Camp Kangaroobie saw students working on their social skills and thinking skills as they embarked on various activities. Students participated in Canoeing, Kangaroobie Life or Death, Kangaroobie Survival, Farming Activities, and an Obstacle Course. Together our students had the responsibility to set up, serve and clean up for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We learnt many new things about farming and farmers and the work that goes into feeding the animals and keeping them safe and healthy. Our students who remained at school looked at using their thinking skills to build the tallest tower using limited resources and to create a floating boat using only paper.

All students had an amazing adventure, whether they were at camp or at school. The teachers were proud of the resilience and persistence students demonstrated throughout their experience.

Kind regards,

Year 5 Team
