BPPS NAIDOC Celebration Day

On Tuesday 20th June, NAIDOC Week was celebrated. The school came together in the stadium in the morning and we said the Acknowledgement of Country together. Then Mackenzie Tapim and her Dad, Ash shared information about their cultural background, being Torres Strait Islanders.

Mackenzie and Ash prepared a wonderful slide show and we learnt about –

  • some of their family traditions and cultural celebrations
  • traditional foods
  • traditional dancing
  • traditional clothes, as well as what
  • music and songs are special to their family.

It was fascinating to learn that when someone dies, the tombstone is covered and not seen by anyone for a while.

We also saw a picture of Mackenzie in her Augemwali which is a colourful dress. Dancing is often done in colourful clothes.

We also learnt that they can eat turtle and dugong as long as they have permission from the elders and that sweet potato and coconut milk is a food enjoyed on special occasions too.

Thank you Mackenzie and Ash for taking the time to prepare the presentation and sharing so much about the Torres Strait Islander Culture.
