Lexile Testing

Year 7 and 8 students will also be completing their second Lexile test in class early this term to measure their growth. In our last newsletter we outlined what this program is and how it contributes to our Reading Program at Lalor Secondary College. Let’s now look at some key vocabulary used when discussing Lexile:

Important Terms for Understanding Lexile Levels

Lexile Level: A numerical value assigned to a text or a reader, indicating its difficulty or reading proficiency. The higher the Lexile level, the more challenging the text or the stronger the reader's abilities.

Text Complexity: Refers to the difficulty of a piece of text based on various factors like sentence length, vocabulary, and syntax. Lexile levels help gauge text complexity.

Reading Proficiency: The level of reading skill and comprehension a reader possesses. It is measured in Lexile levels to assess their ability to comprehend different texts.

Comprehension: The reader's understanding and interpretation of a text. Lexile levels are used to match readers with texts that align with their comprehension abilities.

Reader Measures: Lexile levels assigned to individuals based on their reading comprehension. These are typically determined through reading assessments and tests.

Text Measures: Lexile levels assigned to pieces of text based on their complexity. These can be found in books, articles, and educational materials.

Lexile Growth: The progress made by a reader in increasing their reading proficiency over time, as measured by changes in Lexile levels.
