Sailing

By Adelaide O'Donoghue (Year 11)

School sailing has given me the opportunity to connect my love of sailing to hanging out with friends whilst also representing the school. This year I was very proud to be a helm in the first team. We come second at states with a close loss in the final. I have always found it great to see so many first-time sailors and the younger students coming into school sailing and giving the sport a go. I am glad to be able to give back to the school by sharing my knowledge, skills and passion for the sport. School sailing has not only given me the opportunity to help my younger teammates develop, it has given me the ability to develop my own skills, especially working with others as a team. When I sail and compete out of school, I am an individual racing against the rest of the fleet. In teams racing, three boats form a team, each boat with two sailors, a helm and a crew and they race the other team comprising of three boats around a short course. Unlike other racing, the results are not determined by who is first across the line, it is about the team's total score, which is why working as a team is such an important factor in school sailing. I am looking forward to the upcoming sailing season and encourage anyone who has thought about doing school sailing to sign up and give it a go.

Tasmanian College Basketball Championships

Clemes Years 11 and 12 students recently took part in the Tasmanian College Basketball Championships. The squad was made up of a combination of both of the boys teams from the SSATIS roster. The team played five games and finished a very credible fourth out of 11 teams. There were wins against Rosny College and St Pats. We thank Ronnie Riggs for coaching and we also thank our leaving Year 12 players for their commitment to the Friends' Basketball program since Year 7 for some.
