SHOULD YOUR CHILD HAVE A CAS CALCULATOR?

MR DAMIAN HOWISON - CURRICULUM LEADER MATHEMATICS

There are two types of calculators used in secondary schools. Year 7s begin with a scientific calculator and this will see them through until the end of Year 9. The preferred model at St Mary MacKillop College is the TI-30XB Multiview. Scientific calculators are relatively inexpensive and durable.

When students reach Year 10, the focus in learning begins to shift towards the skills required for VCE Mathematics. VCE study designs require students to work with technology more powerful than scientific calculators, and the most powerful technology that is readily available is the CAS calculator. CAS stands for Computer Algebra Systems. It is not an exaggeration to say that these handheld calculators are mathematically more powerful than most standard computers or laptops. VCE Examination papers today are written assuming that students are proficient with this type of device. The calculator does not make it easier to complete the paper, rather, the questions and problems set by examiners have now evolved to reflect the capability of the technology that is being used. All Unit 4 external exam papers expect that students have and can fluently operate a CAS calculator. It is very important that students have had a few years’ experience with the calculator before these exams begin. It is also necessary for students to have a CAS calculator in order to fully engage with the Year 10 - 12 curriculum. The unfortunate side to this is that a CAS calculator is probably the most expensive piece of school equipment your child will need.

It is understandable that families are reluctant to purchase a CAS calculator. However, it really is necessary for Year 10 students, and VCE students of Mathematics, to have their own CAS calculator. If you are looking to purchase a new calculator online it is worth shopping around for the best price because they do vary. Just be certain that you are purchasing a suitable model. Second-hand calculators are often available, but they tend to find a buyer very quickly. The Front Office is working to find prospective sellers of second-hand calculators.
