Teaching and Learning in 2022: Professional Learning Communities
The start of a brand new school year is always exciting and with over 30 new teachers and 1,000+ students here at ECSC, we made the decision to focus our teaching and learning Inquiry work on 'Know(ing) Thy Student'. After two disrupted pandemic years in education we understand the renewed importance for teachers to really understand where the learners in their classrooms are at and how to support them to grow. This term our Professional Learning Communities have expanded to allow teachers across Learning Areas and leaders to work together on unpacking student data, sharing work samples and reviewing curriculum and assessment practices to ensure all students have the best chance at success early on.
ECSC Department Initiative Team (DIT)
This year we have a new Leadership team working with our learners who require extra support in the classroom. Our revised team approach means that we can work together to target the learning needs of our students more effectively and build the capacity of our classroom teachers.
My name is Viktorija Nikolovska and I am the EAL Instructional Leader at Edgars Creek Secondary College.
I have always been passionate about supporting students who have English as an additional language. As a previous EAL student myself, I understand the importance of helping EAL students adjust within the school settings and supporting them to excel in a learning sequence across different subjects.
In Term 1 2022, I have been focusing on unpacking our current EAL data and identifying the students, their eligibility as well as any previous education history to further support classroom teachers in differentiating for the students.
My name is Nancy D’Aspromonte and I am the Inclusive Education Instructional Leader at Edgars Creek Secondary. This term, I have been working with the teachers to complete the first stages of the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students who are funded. This involves collecting data on students' learning abilities, identifying their strengths and areas of interest as well as identifying any barriers to learning.
Our names are Jacqueline and Sandale and we are the Learning Specialists for the MYLNS program at ECSC.
The Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Support Initiative provides both school wide and intensive support to students working two years or below the national minimum standard in Literacy and Numeracy. The purpose of this initiative is to ensure that students finish high school with the skills required for future work, education or training.
This term we have been working to analyse and unpack literacy and numeracy data sets, such as; NAPLAN results, PAT testing, On-Demand testing and previous reports, to identify students that would benefit from MYLNS support. The purpose of looking at all the data is to understand the impacts of a wide variety of factors that could impact a learner, so that we can effectively apply our supports.
We are excited and passionate about literacy and numeracy and looking forward to supporting students to achieve their maximum learning potential.
Tutor Learning Initiative
Our names are Shelby and Neha and we are maths tutors part of the Tutor Learning Initiative here at Edgars Creek Secondary College. We primarily work with high-achieving students, helping them with classwork and other extension work. We have been busy observing classrooms and helping students, and can’t wait to continue with the program this year. We will be offering lunchtime and afternoon Maths help sessions in the future. Sessions will be communicated via Year Level Noticeboards.
We look forward to seeing you around the college and the classrooms.
