Water Polo Report

Antonia Suthers

‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,’ Dickens’ famous lines encapsulate Term 4 Water Polo at KWS. While we had to overcome logistical challenges in and out of the pool, I feel that we made the most of a tough situation and still managed to improve skills and have a lot of fun along the way. The outdoor pools at the Orange Aquatic Centre finally opened this week and so we can look forward to being a part of the Orange competition next term.

Watching the Year 7s play in their Junior Team play-offs last week, I realised how beneficial the theory and dryland sessions have been. The students’ sense of positional play is developing and they are incorporating a range of strategies covered in the theory sessions into their game. While these sessions were created to help cope with our limited access to the pool, I think it is an innovation that could be included in future programs. The highlight of these sessions were the games on the lawn and the oval which Mr Smedley planned and organised. They were fun, funny and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you too, to Ms Terrey, who, along with me, made up the Year 7 coaching triumvirate this term. I am immensely grateful to them both for the support and enthusiasm they have shown for the sport.

The Intermediate age groups have been incredibly patient and flexible as I experimented with logistics around training, team composition and the internal competition. They showed good humour, commitment and resilience. The majority of players made great contributions to training and playing. It was a real pleasure to see so many students staying back to sub for other teams, helping out with timing, scoring, setting up and packing away. I was grateful for this assistance, firstly because it is very helpful and secondly because it helps inculcate the newer players with the inclusive community culture we have nurtured in KWS Water Polo. I would like to thank the coaches of the Intermediate teams, Miss Anthony, Mrs Collett, Mr Boyd and Mr Oldham.

The Senior 1sts and 2nds squad is a very special group of players. Many of them have been playing Water Polo with KWS for a few years and provide wonderful leadership, both in and out of the pool. They are competitive, sporting and share great camaraderie. I am excited to see what they will achieve in the new year with the resumption of the Orange competition. I would like to thank both Mr Marjoram and Mrs McCalman for the excellent work they have been doing with this squad to prepare them technically and psychologically for the Opens competition.

On Saturday, I spoke to the senior squad. I thanked them for their hard work, commitment and leadership. I was also pleased to announce that Prayas Dulal has been selected as the KWS Captain of Water Polo for the 2021/22 season. Early next year, the Senior coaches, Mr Marjoram and Mrs McCalman, will select and announce the Captain of the 1sts.

Finally, I would like to thank Mr Oldham, a very longstanding coach, for his continued commitment to KWS Water Polo. Mr Oldham has been a consistently reliable, enthusiastic and effective coach. He has given more than is expected of him in terms of the School’s co-curricular commitment. He stays back after his own team has played and referees other games, he fills in for absent coaches and he steps in and takes the lead with training when I start to fade each week. I wish him all the best as he takes some well-earned long-service leave next year.

Reports:

1stXI vs Gladstone

Saturday the 4th of December saw perfect batting conditions for both teams, with clear skies and a dry pitch. Kinross started the match off strongly with the bat. An entertaining and dominant partnership between Hugh Thompson (37) and Jono Rasmussen (22) of 44 runs gave Kinross a stable and confident start towards the innings. Another 44-run partnership between Thompson and Sam Gee (24) saw Kinross for 1/88 off a small number of overs. The superstar WJ Prowse continued his magnificent form bringing up his first half century taking Kinross to 6-193, with partnerships built with Dylan Tucker (19) and Ollie Charlton (14) along the way. Will Englund came up 93 runs just short of a century with an impressive strike rate of 175. Kinross ended their innings 8/212 and were quite comfortable with the score. As we learnt from Ben Stokes 135* in the 2019 ashes, cricket can change any circumstance and isn’t a comfortable game.

Gladstone’s captain Ben McAlpine’s (AKA Ben Stokes) ruthless bowling (4/15) and batting (96) diminished Kinross’s substantial score of 212. Kinross’s score was slowly chased as fielding errors and classy batting from Gladstone were produced. As Kinross learnt to keep the lower order batters on strike the game became awfully close with pressure created within both teams.

In the end, Gladstone’s batting was too skillful and they were able to chase down the high score with only 1 wicket remaining, 8/216 (player short).

2nd XI v Centrals

The 2nd XI had a humbling defeat to a powerful Centrals outfit, losing by 153 runs. KWS lost the toss and fielded. Centrals had a slow start, typical on KWS Main Oval but soon picked up the run rate towards drinks. Liam McKenzie, Angus Pengilly, Harrison Nock and Ben Ronald all bowled tightly before leg spin twins Will Kerr and Charlie Anderson bowled through the middle overs taking five wickets between them. Centrals made it to 7/189 after their 40 overs.

In reply, KWS never troubled the scorers being skittled for 36. There was no resistance despite a descent batting surface. Much experience was gained however and the 2nds will be looking forward to blooding more talent during the holidays.

15 Heat v U16 Cavaliers

The 15 Heat had their first loss of the season against Cavaliers at Bloomfield. Heading into the game on top of the table and having previously defeated the same team, the Heat had a sense of confidence when sending the opposition into bat. The decision proved a good one initially with Tomma Tancred (2/5) and Harvey Shephard controlling things early and taking key wickets. Unfortunately Cavaliers had an excellent partnership in the middle overs and the run rate got almost out of control. Luckily a retirement and a wicket slowed things down, with Ryan Weston (2/18) doing well, and poor running between the wickets left Cavaliers on 7/160, potentially 20 runs short on a good pitch and fast outfield.

In reply, the KWS reply looked promising with Robbie Heath (38) and George Tancred (35) controlling the chase well. KWS were 1/80 at drinks and in the box seat. Unfortunately a rush of the blood to the head removed both set batters and the middle/lower order could not get going again, leaving the chase 30 runs short.

Thank you to Mr Heath for scoring.

U14 Royals vs Orange City Gladiators

The Royals were soundly beaten by the Orange City Gladiators on Saturday.

Orange City batted first and posted 197 from their 30 overs thanks to powerful hitting and smart running between the wickets. In the face of this onslaught the Royals bowlers stuck to their tasks and it was good to see Will Denovan, Henry McCardell, Jono Gee, Charlie Keirle, Josh Brett and Charlie Zell doing their utmost to keep pressure on the Gladiators batsmen. Equally pleasing was the way that the Royals looked to maintain standards in the field. The fielding highlight was a sharp piece of work from Jono Gee that brought about the run out of the Gladiators’ number 3 batsman with a direct hit.

The Gladiators’ bowling attack was also too good on the day. Despite this several Royals batsmen showed a lot of character as wickets fell around them. Henry McCardell, Jackson Davis, Harry Chase, Sam Hughes and Charlie Zell all played with a great deal of determination and made sure that the Gladiators were not allowed to have everything their own way.

Thanks to Mr McCardell for his help with umpiring and scoring.

Triathlon Success

Nine KWS Triathlon team members competed in the non-drafting events at the NSW/ACT Junior Super Sprint Championships. KWS students: Sophie Martin, Jessie Tudor and Tommaso Cornelius-Feltus competed in the drafting events as part of the WRAS group. The events were run over Saturday and Sunday November 27-28 at Gosling Creek Reserve. Events included skills clinics, an aquathon, transition race, mixed team relays, a duathlon and triathlon. Despite adverse weather conditions the athletes swam, cycled and ran around Gosling Creek whilst many others were probably relighting their fires and staying indoors! For many of the KWS team this was their first triathlon, an exceptional effort and display of grit and resilience.

There were a few issues with timing chips so unfortunately not all times were recorded. Notable achievements:

Aquathon – Luca Telfer 2nd, Poppy Nuthall 7th, Felicity Knox 8th  (Kate Cornally finished in the top 10 but unfortunately no time was recorded)

Transition Race – Poppy Nuthall 5th, Felicity Knox 8th , Will Ward 9th , Jess Thompson 10th

Non-drafting Duathlon – Luca Telfer 5th, Will Ward 10th (Kate Cornally finished in the top 10 but unfortunately no time was recorded)

Draft legal Super Sprint Heat – Tommaso Cornelius-Feltus 13th. Tommaso was unfortunately unable to compete in the finals on Sunday.

Overall results for the drafting competitors: Sophie Martin 9th in the 16-17yrs female category, Jessie Tudor 14th in the 16-17yrs female category. Impressive results competing against the best athletes in NSW and ACT.

KWS Triathlon team competitors on the weekend included: Kate Cornally, Tommaso Cornelius-Feltus, Charlotte England, Felicity Knox, Isobella Montagliani, Poppy Nuthall, Luca Telfer, Jess Thompson, Will Ward, Claire Ward-Finn
