Welcome to 2022 from the Wellness Centre

After being absent for leave during Semester Two last year, I am very happy and energised to be back in this wonderful space. Throughout this year, you will be invited to various gatherings and forums in the Wellness Centre, from Youth Mental Health First Aid training, to Chat and Chomp sessions for parents and carers, to an evidence based parenting course which I am working on, and other initiatives which will be available. The Wellness Centre calendar is currently under construction, so to speak. As well as the planned programmes, I hope this space will be used by students and staff, as well as community members, as a place of solace, safety and nourishment.

Counselling Support for Students 2022

For those students who commenced counselling in Semester Two, 2021 with Ms Hamersley, and wish to continue to participate in counselling, please don’t hesitate to make contact with me, via email or phone call. Actually, I am currently reaching out to families and carers of 2021 clients, inviting your communication.

Teen Mental Health First Aid Year Ten

I am proud to inform you that the teen Mental Health First Aid Training will occur this term for Year Ten students, as part of their Health Education course. During Week One, letters will be sent to parents and carers, and to students, explaining the aims and expected outcomes of GSG offering this course. Mr Paul Donaldson has embedded this TeenMHFA course into the timetable for all Year Ten Students to participate in this most valuable skill building programme. Using current research, varied teaching methods and a warm, open classroom environment, students learn how to notice and support their peers who might be struggling. This training offers an approach which helps students to have a discussion with their friend and to link them with an adult, as well as providing them with local and online support agencies and networks.

You would probably know by now that MHFA is an international organisation, in 25 countries, driven by current research that offers courses for adults, adolescents, community groups and such like, with the aims of reducing stigma, sadly still reflected in limited, extant beliefs about and language around mental health problems, and increasing and normalising help-seeking behaviours. In the few years since GSG has been TeenMHFA training Years Eight and Ten students, the effectiveness of the course has been proven within our education space as many more young people are seeking help, clarification and support, for others and themselves. Indeed, I believe that mental health literacy is gradually being strengthened both locally and beyond as a direct result of this important training.
