Students in Focus

2022 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Student in Focus

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Student in Focus aims to showcase the achievements of students who study across a diverse range of senior secondary subjects as they prepare for future tertiary study or employment.  The focus on our selected students enlightens the College and its community partners about the ways in which VCE students may require support, access to resources or services, opportunities to engage with mentors, programs and learning, industry placements and tours, and information and guidance around applying for future scholarships and study.

Christina Sho

Our 2022 VCE Student in Focus is Christina Sho who was identified through her delivery of high-quality attributes across her learning in Year 10.  Christina has a passion to forge a career in the Medicine/Health industry.

In her first year of VCE studies Christina maintained a high level of attendance (98%) and has completed her Unit 1&2 studies in English, General Maths, Studio Arts, Chemistry, Biology, Health and Human Development.  Christina has completed the year with satisfactory completion of all of her units studied, with some of her strongest results coming in the subjects of Health and Human Development, General Maths and Biology where Student Assessed Coursework realised results of A and B grades.

Christina quietly works away at her studies and is building her confidence, knowledge and skills as she prepares for her final year of secondary school study in 2023.

Christina’s attitude and application will see her supported to consider a range of further study and employment pathways beyond Northern Bay College and investigate options for scholarships.

2022 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Student in Focus

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Student in Focus aims to highlight the endeavours of a student studying in the senior secondary applied learning pathway.  It brings to light an understanding of the ways in which the college and its community partners can support the learning and networks of students engaging positively in the VCAL pathway.  For many students in VCAL, access to Structured Workplace Learning, work experience, industry mentoring and knowledge building are the most sought supports as they begin the transition from school into employment.

Indyanna (Indy) Mayo

Indyanna (Indy) Mayo has completed a strong first year in VCAL, a pathway that is transitioning to become the Victorian Certificate of Education – Vocational Major.  In 2022, Indy completed an Intermediate Certificate in VCAL engaging in a Certificate II in Building and Construction and participating in carpentry work as part of her Structured Workplace Learning at Cross Laminated Offsite Solutions (CLOS) which is based in Lara.  She has completed all VCAL outcomes across Enterprise, Literacy, Personal Development Skills, Numeracy and Work-related Skills competently achieving very good results in her studies. As a result of her dedication to her structured workplace learning, in 2023, Indy will continue with a School-based Apprenticeship in Carpentry with CLOS.  It is hoped that this will provide a strong pathway into the carpentry industry for Indy as she completes her VCE VM Certificate.  Indy will also represent the College in her newly appointed leadership role as College Vice Captain.

Moving Forward After Year 12

Ty Gilson

Ty Gilson completed a very special end to his academic career at Northern Bay College this week turning in a brilliant year 12 result. Spending his schooling life at Northern Bay Ty’s dedication to the demands of higher education were realised in the form of an offer to attend the prestigious Ormond College while studying at Melbourne University. For this Ty needs to raise some money to fill out the rest of the required fees. Not one to shy away from working Ty is busy pushing trolleys to build some funding for his education.

With the recent delivery of the ATAR results triggering his scholarship, Ty is now setting his sights on a new pathway but takes with him many lessons learned in the classrooms of Northern Bay. As a student who spent his formative years in the surrounds of the College Ty has known many challenges as he climbed to the heights of Melbourne University. Surviving the Covid lockdowns and the altering of the educational goal posts saw Ty return to his on site studies with renewed vigour.

A driven student, Ty has made the most of his opportunities and will no doubt flourish in his environment taking with him the lessons learned at Northern Bay College.
