Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

In Health this semester, the Year 7s have been exploring nutrition and the impact it has on a developing body. To do this, 7B undertook a session in the kitchen, cooking a “healthy three course meal”.

They started by undertaking some research into what “macronutrients” are and how they help our bodies grow. From this point, in groups, they designed their own menu around what they might like to cook and eat. Once all groups had put forth their proposed menu, the class decided on an entrée, a main and a dessert to cook.

The winning choices were:

  • Garlic Bread
  • Chicken Schnitzel
  • Caramel Ice-Cream

The students then made healthy substitutions to items where possible. For example, using a reduced salt spread instead of normal butter and making the bread from “scratch”, thus ensuring they knew what was in it.

Overall, it was a great success as all students were able to finish cooking and enjoy a meal together. A big thanks to both Megan and Shiona for their help as we wouldn’t have finished without you!
