Lights, Camera, Pius! Film Festival 2022

The seventh annual Lights Camera Pius! Film Festival was a well-attended event and there was a great deal of excitement as the 24 entries were shown. Super short digital animations (very  time consuming to create) and longer dramas featured this year with some very creative filmmaking approaches.

The Year 5 & 6 First Prize went to Arlo Costello for drama “The Tale of John Jones” which the judges praised as a great take on a classic, and for its comedy, action, use of props and surprising ending.”

First Prize for Year 7 & 8 went to Noah Watson and Jake Swan for “The Key of History” which the judges praised for its excellent cinematography, good acting, great editing, effective use of props and sound effects.

First Prize for Years 9 - 11 went to Caleb Hanrahan for “Suburbia” which the judges praised for it well thought out shots, chiaroscuro lighting, use of natural settings and interesting concept.

A huge vote of thanks to the judges: Ms Sam Hood, Cultural Prefect Will Ramsbottom and School Captain Will Staber.

The committee of Luke Sarkissian, Zavier Domenici, Ben Cutbill, Luca van Vuuren and Michael Krizan have worked tirelessly since the last weeks of Term 2 to ensure that a quality program of films were delivered. Collectively they created posters, promoted the festival at assemblies and visiting homerooms, organised prizes, judges and then MC’d the event.

Many thanks to Mr Brannan for his support of the Film Festival this year.

Prestigious Writing Competitions

The Mosman Youth Awards in Literature Annual Contest, in its 30th year, attracted enthusiastic poets, playwrights and authors from primary and secondary schools across the NSW, all of whom competed for a share in the $2,000 (2022) prize pool.

Last Wednesday evening St Pius X College was privileged in having the Mosman Council represented by three of our students from Year 10 and Year 11.  Their ingeniously crafted stories made it possible for them to claim Three Honorary Awards:

  • Cooper Anderson with his story “Dreams”
  • Cameron Masters - “They Would Welcome Us”
  • Luke Sissons - “My Shark”

Though RUOK? Day was celebrated with overwhelming fanfare last Friday, it was also a memorable day for St Pius X College at the Whitlam Centre (Western Sydney), showcased by runner up Year 10 student Tom Roche with his story “Blue Ghosts”. This was a distinguished achievement as there were only eleven awards despite the myriad of entries submitted nationally.

Thomas Cleary (Year 11) was noted as an honorary award recipient for his “Black Lines on Almost Yellow Paper”.

It was reported that over 4,000 entries from around Australia wrote on what matters to them, and these compositions astonished the judges for their insightful nature, their inquisitive takes on the world, and their keen interest in making our communities and country a better place.

Inspired by former Prime Minster Gough Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia's future, the What Matters? Writing Competition was open to school students in Years 5 to 12 in Australia. Responding to the simple question 'What Matters?', entrants were free to express their views on any matter they care about.

Over 298 schools competed by writing about issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the importance of taking care of the environment, and the process of learning about yourself and what matters to you, all shone through in the entries this year.

Year 7 Visual Art Lino Printing

This term in Art we have been doing lino printing on the theme of animals. It has been a long and fun process. We started the first few weeks of the term by learning about colour reduction techniques. The process consists of designing, cutting and printing. Our first process was designing an animal and drawing lines on it. We then put it on printing paper, we put it on some lino and cut out 30% of the lines. We then printed out our first colour which was a bright yellow. After that we washed and cut out another 30%. We did this process multiple times and on our last one we cut out the remaining 10% and printed black. This term has been a very fun time in Art and we are all looking forward to doing it again.
