When kids are reluctant or refuse to attend: A guide for parents
Getting along to school every day is important for many reasons. However, when kids are reluctant or even refuse to attend, it can be stressful for the entire family. Often kids who are reluctant or refuse can be anxious about something at school or being away from home but understanding the range of reasons that explain the issue is important. In this presentation, Glenn will describe school refusal and provide some strategies and tips for parents to help maintain high levels of attendance, and how to respond if attendance problems emerge or are persistent.
Glenn is an Associate Professor and clinical psychologist at the School of Psychology, Deakin University in Melbourne. Glenn’s research aims to improve our understanding students who have difficulty attending school and how we can best support these students, their families and school staff to respond effectively. He has recently co-authored guidance for parents who have a child who is refusing to attend school. He is on the Executive Committee of the International Network for School Attendance.
Details on how to join will be published on Compass the day of the presentation.
