Performing Arts Focus

We are all so excited to have our fabulous students back in the Performing Arts room. We have been very busy being dancers, musicians, singer and actors.

Foundation

What a phenomenally talented group of Foundation students we have this year. It has been such a joy to see such creative and joyful performing artists leap into their learning at FPS!

We have begun the year by exploring how we can move safely in Performing Arts, by learning some new dancing games – the favourite has definitely been ‘Leap for your Letter’. We have also used a variety of percussion instruments to make music together. You might even be able to get your child to teach you the words and actions to ‘The Wishy Washy Washer Woman’.

Year 1 & 2 Students

Our talented students have begun the year by exploring how we can use the Zones of Regulation in Performing Arts. What does Red Zone music sound like? What does a Yellow Zone voice sound like? What does a Blue Zone body look like? How can I get back into the Green Zone?

We also begun revisiting elements of music, starting with tempo. We have been singing songs with changing tempo and using percussion instruments to make music together that is fast, slow and everything in between. As we continue through the term, we will explore more elements of music and discover different ways to sing together.

Percussion Fun in the Upper Grades

We are exploring rhythm and beat this term in the upper grades. Thanks to the wonderful donation of a parent we have had the opportunity to learn beats and techniques on a drum kit. We have made our own drum sticks and hope that they would last the duration of the term! A lot of us like to hit hard. By the end of this unit we hope to learn enough techniques to write our own percussive rhythms and explore them on found percussion instruments.

Choir

What a start of the year for choir! So many enthusiastic new members. It’s also been a real thrill for us to see so many returning Year 5 and 6 students this year. We already have such a strong base as a choir, the music we will make this year is going to be phenomenal! We have started learning some new warm ups and have begun working on our first new song, which we hope to share with you very soon.

Concert Band

We were overjoyed to see our concert band grow again this year. We have started by looking over some pieces we performed at the end of last year and we have been absolutely blown away by how well these musicians play in time together.

Brass

The fabulous Sean from Thornbury High is back again! Every second Thursday, our brass students will be working with Sean to further extend their already incredible trumpet and trombone playing.
