Australian Jobs Report is available now

The National Career Institute have just released the 2022 version of Australian Jobs, which is a pretty good overview of the state of the labour market with some up-to-date advice for finding and securing work. There are some great key take-away points which Lucy from Study Work Grow has summarised in this article.

 

AATIS

  • Updated Apprenticeship Priority List - The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) updated the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List on January 13. The downloadable PDF identifies priority occupations for the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives System. The list includes a subset of occupations and qualifications that have been identified as leading to a clean energy occupation. 
  • Career of the month – Fitter and Turners are responsible for fabricating, assembling, maintaining and repairing precision instruments and equipment/machines.

Careers with STEM

GiST – Girls in STEM Toolkit

The Girls in STEM Toolkit (GiST) has recently updated their website with a brand new look, simplifying navigation to make it easier to find what’s important to you.

For teachers, they have added fifteen new lesson plans, including a thought-provoking lesson on bias in STEM careers, designing simple machines and visualising climate change.

For all, particularly female students with an interest in STEM areas, there are lots of resources available, including stories from women in STEM, a careers quiz, and resources for families. Find out more: https://www.thegist.edu.au/

 

Jobs Victoria Career Counsellors Service

This initiative provides career counselling services to school-leavers, parents, jobseekers…

More information is available via the CEAV Jobs Victoria Career Counsellors Service website.The service is most suited to people who are: 

  • unsure of their work/career options and pathways
  • seeking employment but lack a clear vocational pathway/plan
  • unemployed and struggling to secure work due to lack of work experience (e.g. recent graduates)
  • underemployed and seeking more secure and/or skilled work
  • in need of support to plan a transition to a new occupation/career wishing to pursue a professional career involving tertiary education pathways.

This program and funding aims to help Victorians get back to work and employers find the right staff for their business. More information is available on the Jobs Victoria webpage. Of particular interest is the:

  • Apprenticeships Victoria partnership with the Victorian Government, major project employers, and the TAFE and training system to deliver more job opportunities for apprentices and trainees looking to start a career in the construction and infrastructure sector.   • Recruitment programs which incorporate priority areas like roles in community services, social services, disability and support services, hospitality in regional areas and earn and learn program for target groups. More info Recruitment programs | Jobs Victoria

Free TAFE – Enabling access to free or low fee training in priority areas

Free TAFE covers tuition fees for eligible students. From 2023, Free TAFE will offer more than 70 courses across growth industries, including Early Childhood Education, Health, Construction & Infrastructure, Agriculture, Hospitality and Community & Disability Services.

The Victorian Government Free TAFE website is an ideal starting point for exploring this great option. 

The following courses have been included as part of the 2023 Free TAFE course list. The Victorian Skills Gateway lists courses that currently receive government funding and the new Free TAFE courses will appear on the Gateway.

  • Diploma of Auslan
  • Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan)
  • Advanced Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan)
  • Certificate III in Production Horticulture
  • Diploma of Emergency Health Care
  • Graduate Certificate in Client Assessment and Case Management

Defence Force Roles and Resources

Students considering roles in the Australian Defence Force are encouraged to make use of the Defence Jobs website, this will ensure you have the most up-to-date information on the opportunities available in the Army, Air Force and Navy.

There is also a designated Parent/Guardian webpage and at the bottom of the page you can download a Parent/Guardian Guide.

This report came out in December 2021 and finds the shape of Australia’s workforce is changing as our labour market responds to big forces like an ongoing shift to services and higher skilled jobs, advances in technology and growing automation.
