LS1 Junior Excursion  -  Melbourne Museum!

On Wednesday the 18th of May, Learning Space 1 Juniors took their first excursion for the year to Melbourne Museum.

The children were involved in a program called “My Grandmother's Toy Box” which introduced our children to the concept of change and continuity: how life was in the past and how it is different today.

The story they listened to made connections with families from different periods of Melbourne’s past and showed how every family is part of the broader historical narrative.

Our children investigated different household items that have changed over time (e.g. radios, TVs, an iron, everyday household fan and many more).

One child was asked if she knew what the appliance she was playing with was used for. Her response was “it's what they used to talk to people in space”.

Children were also given the chance to explore other exhibitions where they noticed change.

Our children really enjoyed the exciting new information that was given to them. They were ready to share with each other, with their teachers and with the lovely parents (Clare and Priscilla) who assisted us on the day.

Our parents were excited to share their feedback with us Wednesday night through our SEESAW app. Here were just some of the responses!

Junior Music

This week in Music, the Juniors explored the musical element of ‘Pitch’.

To start the lesson, students got to sing a song called “Peace Like a River” and learned the dance routine. The Juniors then became little investigators and got to try percussion instruments such as the Musical Bells, Ukuleles and Glockenspiels to determine the pitch - whether it was ‘high’ pitch or ‘low’ pitch.

The students then aurally differentiated pitch independently in a mini assessment.

SWAP News (Student Wellbeing and Performing Arts)

In Term 2, a big focus in SWAP lessons for the Juniors and Seniors will be on learning about the Zones of Regulation.

The Zones of Regulation is a framework and curriculum that teaches students how to identify how they are feeling and develop their self awareness to identify their state of alertness. The students check in using the Zones of Regulation poster or display in their class identifying how they feel and which zone they are in.

The children are learning to recognise the signals in their body that tell them which zone they are in such as when they are angry they will feel their body tighten up and their breathing and heart rate may be quicker. The children will then learn to develop some appropriate strategies to help them regulate their emotions and be in the optimal zone for the situation. An important focus for the students has been that there are no good or bad zones but that we experience many different emotions and can sometimes be in multiple zones across the day.

The Junior children in Learning Space 3 helped to create a display in the corridor outside the staff room identifying the zones and classifying different emotions which fit in each zone.

The Senior children have started to explore the Respectful relationships topic about Positive Gender Relationships. The senior students played a game Robot and Controller that explores the way we experience power in relationships. In the game the children took turns in being the robot or controller where they controlled where their partner would move to. The children enjoyed playing the game then participated in a discussion through answering the following questions

  • What was it like to be the robot in the game?
  • What was it like to be the controller in the game? When comparing it to real life, what does the controller remind you of?
  • When comparing it to real life, what does the robot remind you of? What is it like when others can push us around without considering our needs and rights?
  • What responsibilities do people in power have to respect the rights of others with less power.

The children then played the Mirror game where you stand opposite a partner and copy the actions of their partner. They played this game to help them think about the qualities they might find in respectful relationships, in which power relations are equal, rather than the very unequal as in the Robot and Controller game.

Solid Rock!

Who remembers a song from the 80’s called ‘Solid Rock’ by Goanna?

This week, the Seniors in Learning Space 1 created a music video that makes connections to Australia’s colonial and indigenous past. Enjoy!
