Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

With the weather finally clearing we are able to get back on the field training again this week. Most of the C-F teams in rugby that train once a week will have a second session for the next two weeks in the schedule so please check the training roster carefully.

As we get closer to the end of term and assessment pressure starts to build and boys are feeling a little bit stressed in juggling their commitments it is important to remember that boys thrive on routine. If you are used to training on a Monday afternoon then that is what you should be doing, even if you have an exam on the Tuesday. Exercise and fresh air are great stress relievers. If boys are feeling overwhelmed please contact your coach and year co-ordinator in advance to explain why you are going to miss training.

With a couple of weeks to go, I remind all boys playing football and rugby to maintain your discipline and focus on the task at hand. Marist men should not retaliate, regardless of the provocation, and should never be the instigator of poor behaviour. We win and lose with respect for the opponent, officials, ourselves and the game. The AIC has some guiding principles in our vision as a competition that we want to “develop good and healthy young people of character through sport and competition within a Christian context.” This goes for spectators as well. I have received lots of positive emails and reports where our boys have done really positive things but one incident can paint us all in a bad light so let's finish hard and with respect and dignity.

Round 6 Draws

Rugby Union Draw - Round 6 v SPLC

Football Draw - Round 6 v SPLC

Rugby Union

Saturday was a great day against Iona for Reconciliation Round. While we lost some games due to the condition of the fields many teams got on for the first games for a couple of weeks. It was great to see the boys playing again on Saturday.

This Saturday sees us taking on St Peters Lutheran College at home. Unfortunately, St Peters do not have as many teams as we do so there are a large number of supplementary matches across the age groups. The Sport Officer has been working very hard to ensure as many teams as we can have a game this week. We have re-scheduled the Marist Rosalie Tribute day to this Saturday.

Team of the week goes to the 1st XV who had a comprehensive victory over Iona 31-5. The team started strongly and never relented in by far their best performance of the season. Pat Tierney led the team around the field well and in the forwards Jack Billing was strong at the breakdown and aggressive in defence.

1st XV

On the weekend, the boys loaded up the bus and headed out to Iona hungry for another win. We knew it would be a big task with Iona hosting their Old Boys day and Reconciliation Round in front of a hostile crowd. Our goal was to start strong and that we did, with some brilliant lead up work by Bailey Caplick, Tom Weaver and Reggie McMillan, then some great thinking from Patrick Tierney to hit Connor Lyons on a short ball to score the first try of the match. Lyons then extended the lead to 10-0 with a penalty kick. The boys’ second try came from some magical work from outside backs Tom Howard, Tasman Barry and Connor Lyons, with Howard breaking away down the sideline and then passing back inside to Barry who then offloaded to Lyons to score one of the best tries of the season.

With a 17-0 lead at the break, the boys did well to maintain their discipline and were eventually awarded a penalty try after Cody O’May went within centimetres of scoring. Sustained pressure in the second half led to another penalty try after the forwards generated momentum from a driving maul before the maul was collapsed with the try line in sight. Despite conceding a try late in the game, it was an excellent performance from the Marist lads who earned a confidence-building 31-5 victory against Iona.

Football

In a reverse of the rugby results, Marist dominated the younger matches and were outplayed in the 1st XI match on the weekend against Iona, losing 5-0. It was great to see the boys back on the park and representing the college on the weekend. It has been another frustrating year for the winter codes with weather interruptions right from the start. This weekend we host St Peters Lutheran College who have been building their football program and will pose a strong challenge for us.

1st XI

Saturday’s game against Iona saw two sides desperate for a win. Coming off a draw against Padua the boys knew that this was the game to show some pride and if not fight for themselves, fight for the school and the crest which everyone wears so proudly on their chest. Leading up to the game against Iona, we saw two major injuries which set the team back significantly with one of them being the captain. This had an impact on the boys and was evident when we conceded two quick-fire goals. After this we knew we had to work harder and start showing more pride for ourselves. Nobody wanted to leave that game with another loss. After the two goals, we started going back to what we do best and from that we had chances to score but none were capitalised on. Then came halftime and a much-needed stern talking to was projected onto the boys. Everyone knew what they had to do and switches were flicked in some player’s mind. Michael Hayter, Declan Boundy and James Woolaston showed what it means to fight till the end. However this wasn’t enough, Iona showed great football and deserved to win, they played to their strengths and swept us out of their fields scoring three more goals in the second half finalizing the result as a 5:0 win to Iona. Obviously this isn’t the result we were hoping for, but the game showed how far AIC football has come as a whole with each and every game showing incredible standards of football.

Cross Country

Good luck to all students participating in the AIC Cross Country Championships tomorrow at Curlew Park. After many hard months of training, the squad will be aiming for a 6th consecutive championships. Thank you to head coach Mr Shane Ward and all the XC supervisors for their guidance of the team.

Please see below photos from the last training session on Monday morning.

Water Polo

Last Friday night we played in the School Boys' Water Polo Invitational. We won the Middle Years comp winning all 7 matches and Angus Cope (Year 9 Foley) won MVP from the meet. It is a significant outcome as we played against Trinity (from the Gold Coast), St Andrews (Sunny Coast) and BBC - all of who run quality Water Polo programs.

Our Opens came 6th overall - again a great outcome. We had 3 players withdraw from the comp on the morning of the event and we had to engage some swimmers and a Year 7 student - Archie Anderson (Foley) play for us. The boys played well above themselves and with a spec of luck could have finished top 4. In their final match - the 5th/6th playoff - the players decided they would focus on getting Archie a goal rather than winning; which they did.

A big thank you to Anita Cope who managed the Middle Years team.
