SAKG Updates

It has been a very exciting 2 weeks in the kitchen and garden as the grade 5 and 6 finish for this term, don’t worry we still have 4 sessions in term 2!

 

It has been a very busy time in the garden with so much produce.  We have harvested sweet corn, tomatoes, loads of herbs and eggplants which have been used in many kitchen recipes.  We look forward to the figs ripening and are keenly watching the pumpkin plants. 

 

For our last 2 kitchen sessions we made gnocchi with an eggplant sage tomato sauce, banana blueberry “nice cream” (made with frozen fruit and coconut milk), corn salad with buttermilk dressing and bulgur stuffed zucchini.  The students were delighted with the instant ice cream and the gnocchi was a firm favourite.

 

For our final class this term we had a wonderful picnic session utilising our beautiful deck. We made focaccia, cabrese salad, warm carrot and haloumi salad with carrot top pesto, hummus and baba ganoush and something a little sweet to finish, nashi pear crumble muffins.

 

We explored making things by hand without using technology. Our dips were made using a mortar and pestle, students found that by using this piece of equipment enhances and maintains flavours by grinding gently without heating the ingredients. We also discovered that eating the carrot tops not only made for a delicious dressing but its environmentally beneficial by reducing waste and using the whole plant.

 

We could not accomplish what we have without the fantastic support of our community and wonderful volunteers. The kids benefit greatly by having your support and guidance each session in kitchen and garden. We are so thankful to work with you and get to know you.

Classes this year are on Mondays;

No kitchen garden classes on the Monday the 9th of March as it’s Labour Day.

Final classes for the term will be on Monday the 16th of March
