A parent's guide to Year 12 results day

As our Year 12 students are about to finish their time at school, it is a good opportunity to offer some advice to Year 12 parents and also Year 11 parents whose child is completing their first Unit 3/4 subject, on how they can best manage results day. Results will be released on 16 December 2021.

Before results are released:

  • It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the process. This includes being aware of how the preferencing system works and key dates for change of preference. This information can be accessed from www.vtac.edu.au/results-offers as well as www.vtac.edu.au/dates.
  • It is important to encourage your child to focus on their efforts over Year 12, more than on the results. It is important to highlight that their results do not define them.

 On results day:

  • Provide lots of encouragement.
  • Allow your child time to process their results and then provide a listening ear when they are ready.
  • Allow your child the opportunity to acknowledge their feelings and remind them how proud you are of their efforts all year.
  • Provide support, not advice. They need to take ownership of, and be confident in, their decisions.

Post results – for our Year 12 students:

  • After they have had time to process their results it is then time for decisions to be made regarding change of preference.
  • Encourage students to explore alternative pathways to achieve the same outcome if they have not received the required ATAR for a particular course.

Support in this process can be provided by the following people:

  • the school Careers Counsellor who will be available for appointments
  • by attending a Change of Preference Advisory Day at a University
  • one-on-one Consultation with an undergraduate course expert at a University
  • by talking to a course expert over the phone or via live chat. All universities supply these and information can be accessed via their website.

Here is an additional resource from Latrobe University.
