Studio Arts Unit 4 – Outcome 3 studies

This year our Studio Arts Unit 4 students were unable to cover their outcome 3 study, by attending public and commercial galleries in person.

We were very fortunate to meet online with Dominic Maunsell and Graham Wickes from Maunsell Wickes Gallery at Barry Stern in Paddington NSW. Dominic and Graham were very warm and welcoming to the girls. They explained the gallery operations and imparted a lifetime of knowledge in the Arts industry.

Graham and Dominic also organised for the current artist exhibiting, Alexandra Mills, to personally discuss and show her exhibition to the students. She explained her research into the Darlinghurst Prison and how this had been turned into the current National Arts School, where she studied. The buildings which are in their original state, had such an impact on Alexandra that further research allowed her to base her artworks, and the exhibition on the historical knowledge she gained. Alexandra discussed her use of found objects, which are found in some of the artworks, such as dismantled bird cages, and other traditional materials and techniques of drawing, photography and needle work.

Our students will be able to use this valuable information and experience to complete their study and examinations.

Shelford thanks Dominic Maunsell, Graham Wickes and Alexandra Mills for all their time and participation in assisting with the education of our students.
