Back in the classroom!

Prep

Welcome back to the classroom, preps! We have been so excited to see your happy faces. Last week was all about getting ready to embrace the change from home learning to classroom learning (Monday Tuesday and Wednesday this week and next week) . Students have been reminding themselves that mistakes are great (its how we learn!) and sometimes things aren't perfect but we can be proud if we try our best! Its the fun to be with each other, and having just three days together let's us get used to that togetherness.

We have loved watching our preps engage with the following activities over the last 2 weeks:

  • Using fruit loops necklaces to learn about number partitioning up to 20
  • Writing procedural texts (making toast, getting ready for school)
  • Revising common words
  • Building towers out of spaghetti and grapes/marshmallows (to remind us how we can play games respectfully)
  • Singing with our online prep choir - and loving the rhythm of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'.
  • Enjoying the sunshine during our PMP program (motor skills development)
  • Making spooky Halloween decorations

Grades 1 and 2

I'm sure our grade 1 and 2 students have enjoyed being back in the classroom (Thursday and Friday this week and next week).

Grade 1 and 2 students have been skip counting, and exploring place value in maths, using hands-on strategies including counters, blocks and lego to understand units, tens, hundreds (and extending into the thousands!). Literacy (reading and writing) has involved:

  • Weekend writing - recounting our own experience helps to increase confidence and build vocabulary linked to describing a series of events in a sequence over time
  • Persuasive writing - convincing the reader is an essential skill that continues to be developed and in Year 6 culminates in debating competitions
  • Making personal connections to texts - one of the ways in which we make sense of what we read is through connecting elements in the text to our own experiences
  • Learning more about the author Aaron Blabey - of Pig The Pug fame.

Grades 3 and 4

Maths: This week we are comparing and ordering fractions,  investigating mixed fractions and improper fractions,  and the times table challenge continues!

In reading/writing we have been emulating Aaron Blabey - and the use of rhyming words, sentence structure and punctuation.

And SEL has been focusing on the positive - mindset, motivation and positive self talk are invaluable tools for a healthy and happy mind.

Grades 5 and 6

We can't wait to see you tomorrow!

The current Grade 5/6 Authors Study is all about Shaun Tan. His creepy and haunting book of "fractured fairy tale" illustrations uses sculptural elements and photography to bring The Brother's Grimm Fairy Tales to life, and these images have inspired our senior students to create pieces of fairy tale inspired annotated art works, and written snapshots to describe scenes.

Our brilliant, creative students also continue to practice their poetry slam performances - not long to go now!

SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) has also seen our student utilise their creativity to produce storyboards for a short film about the ups and downs of life.

Who remembers the tiny homes challenge? Well, this week our students have been using the skills they developed in the last challenge to use scale in their designs for billy carts. Take a look at some of the Wacky Races billy cart designs below:
