Safer Internet Day 2018

Tuesday the sixth of February was 2018’s Safer Internet Day. To celebrate this, the year seven students attended a talk given by Adrian Turner who is the CEO of Data61 and Dr Sara Khalifa who is currently a researcher at Data61.

 

What is Data61?

With more than 1,100 staff CSIRO’s Data61 is Australia’s leading data innovation group which was formed in 2016 when CSIRO’s Digital Productivity flagship and NICTA (National ICT Australia Ltd) combined.  Data61 have helped to create multiple amazing things such as: Bionic Vision which helps patients who have lost their eye sight, Nitero which is a company that is designing ultra-low power WiFi which means that wifi can perform at up to ten times faster than the current WiFi, and many more. 

More about Adrian Turner

Adrian Turner is a technology entrepreneur who has spent 18 years in Silicon Valley, America.

He is also co-chair of the Australia Cyber Security Growth Network (ACSGN) and was a co-founder of smart phone and Internet of Things security company Mocana Corporation.

 

More about Sara Khalifa

Currently Sara Khalifa is researching smart wearables (such as apple watches and fitbits), Internet of things, energy harvesting, and human activity recognition (for example, when you walk, your phone will unlock). She completed a PhD in computer science and engineering from the University of NSW in February 2016.

 

More about the CSIRO

CSIRO stands for Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation. It has over 5,000 staff and over 55 locations across Australia. The CSIRO have invented some pretty cool things such as: WiFi, Plastic Banknotes and Aerogard.
