Screen Time

Screen time is the time spent each day using devices with screens, like TVs, video consoles, smartphones, iPads and tablets.

We know that children and youth spend a lot of time online and often from multiple devices. Many Concord School students are using a screen every day. At home screen time can also be an easy option to keep children occupied in our busy lives.

So how much screen time is too much for your child?

There is no magic guideline for the ‘right’ amount of time for children to spend online. This is a matter for you to decide—but there are guidelines that can help you in addition to factoring in the age of your kids, their maturity level and your family dynamics.

Recommended screen time:

 Under 2 years

Zero. Babies and toddlers should not watch any television or other electronic media (DVDs, computers and electronic games).

 2 to 5 years

Less than one hour per day. Limit their time sitting and watching TV or using other electronic media to less than one hour per day.

 5 to 17 years

Fewer than two hours per day. Limit their use of electronic media for entertainment (i.e. TV, computers and seated electronic games) to no more than two hours per day.

Victoria Police Supporting Concord School Community

We are very fortunate to have the regular support from Senior Constable Shanice Vilone of Victoria Police. Shanice is often around the school engaging with students of all ages, talking to classes about the role of police in our community and supporting programmes such as cyber safety.

Recently Shanice arranged for all of the Year 12 students to travel into Melbourne East Police Station for a one-hour session on how to keep safe in the city.  The topics covered included the learning the difference between beggars and buskers, using ATMs, thieves working in groups to distract people, mental health and homelessness issues and tips on how to keep safe such as not making eye contact, carrying phones and wallets in their front pocket.

Shanice made herself available to travel to/from the city with us, helping to promote a positive police/youth relationship. We are very grateful for Shanice’s willingness to help the students and us.

Shanice’s daughter Danielle is in Upper Primary.
