Work Experience

Year 10 Work Experience Program

Students in Year 10 should now be actively seeking work experience placements for last week of Term 2. The due date for the return of work experience arrangement forms to the Careers Office is Friday March 20 which is only two weeks away.

As a parent of a student in Year 10 it would be helpful if you could start a conversation with your child to see how they are going with arranging a work experience placement. For ideas, students can refer to their Morrisby Career Profile that they completed last year. They can also speak to family and friends for suggestions and contacts.

If parents have any queries regarding work experience, please call Mrs Peck on 8458 2847 or email peck.wendy.j@edumail.vic.gov.au.

Students are welcome to visit the Careers office during the recess, lunch breaks and after school. Mrs Peck is available on Monday to Thursday.

Below you will find further details about the Work Experience program

The expectation at Viewbank College is that all Year 10 students will complete Work Experience and undertake Occupational Health and Safety Training as part of their compulsory curriculum.

Year 10 Work Experience will be over the final week of Term 2  Monday June 22 - Friday June 26 2020.

Students MUST find the work experience themselves and ideally the placement should be in line with a student's aspirations. It is important for students to search and locate a suitable placement. Communicating with employers is an important part of the process. However, we ask that parents give lots of support and encouragement to their child and of course, where possible, use the family and friends network.

Further information about the work experience program including a list of opportunities and a Work Experience Handbook can be found on the Viewbank College Careers website under the Workplace Learning tab, Work Experience.

Once students have found a willing employer they need to:

  • Complete an official Work Experience Arrangement Form (Ministerial Order no. 382).  This form constitutes a legal document.
  • Students undertaking a VET Certificate as part of their Year 10 program may choose to use the Structured Workplace Learning Form (Ministerial Order 55) instead of the Work Experience Arrangement Form if their placement is linked to the VET study they are doing.
  • Parent/guardians and students should read the form carefully before signing.
  • Employers must also sign the form before it is returned to Mrs Peck, the VET/Work Experience and SWL Coordinator who will organise for the Principal to sign it.
  • All students should have submitted their forms by Friday 20 March for placements to proceed. No student can undertake work experience without the full completion of the form. This is a legal document which insures employers against incidents in the workplace. If there are any changes to an arrangement, it is vital that Careers Staff are kept informed.

Occupational Health and Safety Training:

In preparation for work experience students must undertake Occupational Health and Safety training. Students must undertake 2 tests - a general module and an industry specific module, which relates to their proposed placement. Students must achieve competencies in these two areas. On successful completion, students will be awarded a certificate which should be forwarded to Mrs Peck to be signed and returned to students.

Most students will have completed both modules at the end of Year 9. If they haven't yet completed the modules they will need to complete them in their own time as soon as possible.  Without successful completion of OH&S training, students are legally forbidden from undertaking Work Experience.

Please note that in addition, some industries require students to complete additional forms so placements need to be organised with sufficient time to meet all of the requirements. This particularly applies to those students who wish to work with animals in boarding kennels, vet clinics or on farms.
