Year 9 and 10 Learning Community

Year 10 New Curriculum 2016

The Secondary School teams have been undertaking a review of the curriculum programs offered. The review has focused on Year 10 subject offerings, current curriculum structures that lead to VCE, and current VCE student data.

The teachers at Year 10 thought we could offer more choice, better links to senior pathways and a curriculum that would be really interesting.

Have a look at some of these subjects - it makes you want to go back to school!

The students have now selected their subject choices for next year. The teachers are already busy writing the new programs ready for 2016.

Year 9 Student Success

Catalina joined Collingwood College in Term One this year. She has travelled to Australia from Chile with her mother Evelyn and joined our 9B group.

Catalina is a very keen cyclist and has started training with the Brunswick Cycling Club since arriving in Melbourne.  She has had much success already winning the Victorian Metro Championships and the Eildon Tour. Catalina also took second place in the Victorian Junior Road Championships.

Of particular note is that Catalina represented Collingwood College in the Victorian School Road Race and she won the race! A huge congratulations to Catalina on an amazing result, demonstrating that passion, hard work and training brings great rewards.

Real Industry Job Interviews

On October 15th, students from Year 10 participated in mock job interviews at Richmond Town Hall as part of the Real Industry Jobs program. Students worked incredibly hard polishing their C.V.s and job applications in preparation for their interviews. They were highly commended on their performances by industry employers and received useful feedback to build on in the future. Well done Year 10!

Disaster hits Yarra!

On Wednesday August 26th, Yarra and Moreland Councils hosted a simulated mock chemical spill in an exercise at Collingwood Town Hall. It included personnel from Victoria Police, the State Emergency Service, Australian Red Cross, St John’s Ambulance and Save the Children Australia. 10A students played the victims of a fake truck crash, pretending to have various injuries. Student make-up artists from NMIT covered the volunteers in fake blood to make their injuries look even more realistic!

Immigration Museum

On the 29th May, thirty Year 10 students (along with Christa and Veronica) visited the Immigration Museum on Flinders Street to find out about concepts of Identity and Belonging in Australia.

Students also visited Sandridge Bridge to view the sculptures representing immigration to Australia. At the museum, working in small groups, students unpacked suitcases filled with objects, artefacts and documents revealing a story from a particular wave of immigration. Each suitcase held a real story. The groups shared their discovered stories, creating a timeline of migration to Australia. Students also had time in the museum galleries to explore, in more detail, specific stories of migration.

Thank You

Christa and Erin would like to thank all Year 9 and 10 students, parents and teachers for their support and contributions to the community this year. Enjoy your break and here's to a happy and successful 2016!
