Year 5 and 6 Learning Community

Year 7 Transition Day
Students will be excited about their first day at High School either at Collingwood or pastures new. The teachers in the secondary school have put together a cracking curriculum for our Main Program and Steiner students.
This included Art, Sport, Main lesson, Animation, English and Maths classes.
Students took part in six classes. There was morning assembly to start in the Theatre as well as morning tea and a BBQ lunch, provided by our lovely SRC students.
Later that day there was a parents' evening, where parents were able to meet the teachers and some key support staff for 2016. There was a short presentation followed by the chance to talk to teachers and ask questions.
5/6M and 5/6J Class Projects
This semester the Grade 5/6s have been learning about the colonisation of Australia and its impact on the Aboriginal people. The students have learned about old maps, Australia before European settlement, why the people in the Northern Hemisphere were exploring the world and the discovery of Australia by the Europeans. The students made dioramas and a research poster showing an aspect of life in Australia during Colonial times and showcased their learning at an expo in the school library. They are learning about exploration, why people explore beyond their immediate environment and are currently studying an Australian explorer in depth.
Throughout the year the students have been learning The Seven Steps to Writing Success. This term the students have brought their skills together to create a finished piece. They have planned for success, created a sizzling start, used dynamic dialogue, tightened tension, banned the boring bits, used ‘show don’t tell’ and ensured they ended with impact. Some students were so proud and confident of their writing ability that they have entered a piece in a national writing competition. 2016 will build on this wonderful writing development.
5L Ancient Greek Olympics
As part of their Greek Culture & History Main Lesson, 5L attended an Ancient Greek Olympics Day with 3 other Class 5 groups from Briar Hill PS, East Bentleigh PS and Mornington Park PS. The children were divided into City States and competed in the events of Javelin, Discus, 50m Dash, Standing Long Jump and Wrestling. Awards were given for skill and grace. It was a beautiful, sunny day – perfect weather for the Olympics! The games were opened by Hera, wife of Zeus (thank you Jacinta!) and parents from each school provided an amazing feast of Greek food for the hungry athletes at lunch. At the closing ceremony each child received a medal for participation. A great day was had by all. A huge thank you to Frank Stanley for organising the day.
6N Robin Hood Play
For their drama Main Lesson, 6N put on two sensational performances of Robin Hood in the school theatre, one a matinee for the school and an evening performance for parents and friends. The children worked really hard on their voice projection, choreography and stage craft to deliver an entertaining and humorous production. They should be very proud of themselves!
