Unit 1/2 Health and Human Development

Health and Human Development is a social science subject. We explore the health and wellbeing of Australians and in particular health issues pertaining to Australian youth. Guest speakers are invaluable in bringing the theoretical concepts studied in class to life. This year the students were lucky to hear the personal stories and experiences from 4 guest speakers:

  • Tory Earl (staff member on leave) on her experience with pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood
  • Dr Mary-Anne Lancaster on being a General Practitioner, Australia’s health care system and rural healthcare
  • Amy from Beyond Blue on the mental health of Australian youth
  • Two speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous on signs of unhealthy drinking and services and resources available.

I would like to thank these speakers and hope the students have gained some insight into the significance, and at times stigma, of some of the health issues discussed.
