From the Head of Sport & Co-curricular

Mr Joe Priest

Commitment

Commitment is one of the school values here at Kinross Wolaroi and we look to foster this amongst our student body. The co-curricular program plays an integral role in educating our students about commitment. It was pleasing to see many of our Year 12 students at fixtures and trainings over the last week honoring their commitment, despite having Trial HSC exams this week. It is truly a credit to the Year 12 cohort.

So far this year we have had many fine examples of where commitment can take you. There is no finer example of this then what has been displayed by two of our swimmers this year. Kyla Brown and Bianca Fuller are really making a name for themselves in the representative swimming pathway.

Congratulations to Kyla who is now the NSW champion in the100m Breaststroke over the weekend.

Bianca and Kyla are currently away competing for NSW All Schools at the Australian National Swimming Championships in Brisbane. At the time of writing Kyla has a Bronze medal from the 200m medley relay and Bianca is now a National Champion with Gold in the 50m Butterfly, Silver in the 200m IM and Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke. The school wishes the girls the best of luck for the remainder of the carnival. A truly inspirational example of where commitment can take you.

Athletics

It is fantastic to have the representative athletics season back on our calendar after a two-year hiatus. A reminder to the athletics squad that we have the following events:

  • WAS Athletics 29th August
  • ISA Athletics – 13th September
  • CIS Athletics – 20th September

Triple Jump will be held on Sharpe oval during lunch time on Friday 19th August. Any student who wishes to be considered for selection into the athletics team should attend or see Mr Priest if they are unable to attend.

Hockey

KWS 1sts vs Feds – 6-2 win

Game 1 against Confederates required great skills, communication, hard work combined with plenty of running. We had some terrific goals scored by Georgia Sweetapple and Phoebe Smith with Cailin McKay being able to sneak two away. Overall, the team had a great game playing strongly as a unit. We came away with a well-deserved 6-2 win that proved all hard work in training is paying off.

KWS 1sts vs CYMS – 4-0 loss

Game 2 commenced at 3:20pm Sunday afternoon against Cyms. Still buzzing from the mornings win we were about to face our toughest competitors with optimisim. It was a great game; we held our heads high and stuck to our game plan. Maka Mutyiri did a terrific job defending off the impressive shots delivered her way and Phoebe Poole showed her strength in defence. The girls should congratulate themselves on terrific sportsmanship and attitude during both games, with referees commenting that they were a pleasure to ref. Unfortunately, ended our day with a loss but the score did not reflect our efforts. A good result against the undefeated competition leaders. The win against them is getting closer.

KWS Cavaliers Vs CYMS – loss

Despite the freezing cold weather the KWS Cavaliers were eager to give it there best, playing against the Cyms. Elke Sweetapple and Bonnie Leighton playing strong in defence. A penalty shot in goal for the Cyms, putting goalie, Zoe Bird under pressure, although that didn’t stop her as she saved the shot. Overall, great sportsmanship shown throughout the game across both teams, resulting in a win for the Cyms.

KWS Lakers vs KWS Knicks – win

The KWS Lakers hockey team have been hard at work training and playing this year, I have seen massive improvements in skills from the players and had a fun game on Friday night against Kinross Knicks coming away with a great win. Having a bye the weekend before the team were eager to get on the field especially playing against familiar faces.

Lakers have been working hard on our positional play as of late and it was great to see it executed during the game with players looking to pass more and work into open space. It has been a fun season so far and I am excited for our next few games together. Keep up the excellent work Lakers.

KWS Warriors vs KWS Bulls – 6-2 win

After 2 weeks of playing above and beyond expectations (due to being very short handed from Covid and the Flu) the mighty Warriors took the field with a full forward line and plenty of confidence.

Lachlan’s comment summed it up in the sheds before the game. “Are there 5 people up the front in Hockey?”  Despite the freezing conditions, the Warriors continued their much-improved teamwork and short passing game to establish an early lead. Sophie, Lulu, and Hannah did an excellent job of controlling the mid-field while Zoe and Lachlan caused chaos up front combining with Grace to mount raid after raid. The way they looked to use each other brought a smile to an old coach’s dial. Another special mention must go to Max in goals, he did an excellent job in very trying conditions. In the end the Warriors managed to get over a brave Bulls side by 6-2.
