Music, Band & Choir

Term 3, Week 6

Assembly Performances

This Friday 19 August we are fortunate to have two performances at assembly - all the Foundation students AND the School Choir

These students have been busy rehearsing for Friday's performance, and it would be wonderful if parents (and grandparents) who are available could come along to support them!

Please see the Key Dates page of this newsletter (and the Compass Calendar) for details of assembly performances in the coming weeks!

F-6 Music Share

'Music Share' is an wonderful opportunity for students to share their creative talents and interests with their peers. It is not uncommon to see the surprise on students faces when their classmate begins performing an instrument they didn't even know they could play! So far this term we have seen and heard:

  • Latin, hip-hop and country dancing,
  • Solo and group instrumentalists (violin, keyboard, piano, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, flute)
  • Songs sung in Japanese and English,
  • Comedy acts and joke tellers,
  • Australian poetry,
  • Instruments made by students,
  • Compositions made on Song Maker/ Garage Band.

All class teachers have a copy of their grade's Music Share timetable.  Grade 1-6 students also have a copy in their Showbie Music folder (Music Share assignment), so please remind them to check Showbie to ensure they know when they are scheduled.

Students who have recently decided they would like to share something will be given a date once all others have had their turn. This may run into Term 4, but that's OK - I won't allow them to miss out!

2022 Elvis Week!

YES! Elvis Week IS an actual thing!

This week marks the 45th anniversary of Elvis Presley's passing..... and as I am not at Graceland (Memphis, Tennessee) celebrating with other Elvis fans (as I was 5 years ago!), we will be acknowledging the King of Rock 'n' Roll by listening to a variety of his music from 1956 - 1977 at bell times this week.

Music Appreciation / Showbie

To encourage an appreciation of different musical genres, I have added a selection of songs from recent Bell Music playlists (including Motown and Elvis Presley) to the Grades 1-6 Music Folders on Showbie. These can be found in the folder Music Through the Decades. I suggested to students they could listen to the songs while doing their household chores..... (some students didn't know what chores were!)

James Morrison

This Thursday, members of the Symphonic Band and all students learning brass instruments in the Band program will be walking to Blackburn High School for a performance by Australian jazz trumpeter, James Morrison.

James Morrison is one of Australia's greatest jazz musicians - a 13-time ARIA award nominee and 2-time ARIA award winner, James Morrison has been active in the Australian jazz scene since 1983 and has worked with international artists such as Dizzie Gillespie, Ray Charles, BB King, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston and Quincy Jones. This will be an amazing opportunity for BPS students to see a world-class performance by one of the best. It's not often that we are able to have BPS students attend a concert of this kind!

Wishing you all a fabulous fortnight ahead!

Yours in harmony,
