YEAR 8 ITALIAN IMMERSION DAY

Year 8 students participated in an immersion day on Friday July 29.

Why a Languages Day?

Students learnt some new and interesting facts about the Italian culture and language throughout the day’s activities. They had the opportunity to complete a variety of tasks to celebrate Italian culture, including:

  • a STEM activity to introduce them to the works of famous Italian Leonardo da Vinci.
  • creating masks using their artistic skills to learn about Carnevale, which is a tradition that takes place in Venice every year.
  • honing their Italian language skills to play a game of ‘Guess Who?’, revise adjectives and learn words for family members
  • learning about the Italian game of Bocce and testing their sporting skills out on the field with other classmates.
  •  working their way through challenges to unlock success in escape room tasks by using their humanities skills.
  • immersing themselves in the Italian language by eating Italian food and viewing an Italian film.

STUDENT REFLECTION

On Friday July 29 the Year 8s had their Italian Immersion Day. For 8C, the first activity was Bocce, then we made Carnevale Masks and completed an Italian Escape Room challenge. After recess, we made Leonardo da Vinci flying models out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Later, the same day we did Italian ‘Guess Who’, and after lunch (Free Pasta; I had five bowls!), we watched the Disney film Luca in Italian.

My Favourite part of the day was the Bocce and the pasta for lunch. Next time, I am hoping to learn Briscola as we did not have time for that.

YEAR 7 MOSAICS

Magnifici mosaici

The Year 7 Italian class delved into art to get into the spirit of Languages Week during the third week of the term.

In the tradition of ancient Rome, they created colourful paper mosaics on black cardboard which related to Italian places and culture, including scooters, the Ferrari logo, the Venice Carnevale, the Colosseum, Italian produce, and the Ponte Rialto in Venice.

Spettacolare!

STAFF V YEAR 12 STUDENTS' SOCCER MATCH

The Year 12 huddle pre-game was in true Italian style (with both passion and fury), both pre-determinates of the game that was to follow. Year 11 student Alexandru Stoica graciously stepped into the foray and umpired the hotly anticipated annual match between the two opponents.

The sea of Year 12 students swarmed like bees made it difficult to distinguish a stand-out performer. On the other hand, the teachers were lucky to have the quick-footed standout Mr Andrew Greville who managed to play exceptionally well, even sporting some lovely formal leather shoes for attire. (Quintessential Italian fashion on the field!)

Both teams played a close, heated game, but the Year 12’s were lucky to slip a ball past Mr John Menhennett who had arms like the Italian goalie Gianluigi Buffon.

Ben Fatto, Year 12 and In Bocca al Lupo to the teachers in 2023!
