The Peer Support Program continues this term. It is fabulous to see the Year 7 students engage with their Year 10 Peer Support Leaders. The current Year 9 students will have the opportunity to apply to be Peer Support leaders in 2023 after an information session on 1st September.

We wish the Year 11s well for their Personal Development Day in the city on Tuesday 9th August. We also have “batyr” coming out to speak with our Year 11 students about mental health. Batyr is a ‘for purpose’ preventative mental health organisation, created and driven by young people, for young people. The Year 12s will enjoy a dance session with The Nikki Visaj Movement to help shake off some of their stress!

Uniform Guidelines were emailed out to all parents and students this week as we undertake our ‘Uniform Improvement Strategy’. The College uniform assists in creating an atmosphere of uniformity, pride, loyalty and equity. All students enter each class as equals as far as image and dress are concerned; their individuality comes from their attitude, character, spirit and involvement. Students should wear it proudly and well - both in and out of school - as at all times they are ambassadors for our College.

As many young people use the Social Media App ‘Tik Tok’ we would like to bring your attention to this article and encourage everyone to check their privacy settings.

Youth Summit “Conquering 2022 and Beyond”

Killester was wonderfully represented at the City of Greater Dandenong Youth Summit on Tuesday 26th July.  Our students participated in a range of activities and discussions and shared their wonderful opinions and ideas at the Springvale Town Hall.  They spoke with great confidence and enthusiastically participated in all the activities.  They were all wonderful ambassadors.  Here are their reflections…

I’m a part of the City of Greater Dandenong Young Leaders Program and have been working on the Youth Summit for a few months now. It was really fun and interesting to listen to all the year 9s and 10s from schools inside of Greater Dandenong. We spoke about the impacts on mental health, physical health and stress on young people. I loved participating in this, as it not only grew my leadership and communication skills but also gave me insight into the minds of young people.

I’m a member of the Young Leaders Program in the City of Greater Dandenong in 2022. The Youth Summit was a great success, and everything went off without a hitch! I was a group leader for the yellow team. It was an incredible opportunity to demonstrate my leadership and communication skills by leading my group to different workshops such as African Drumming, Art Therapy, and a consultation with Headspace. Overall, it was an eye-opening experience to hear young people's issues and thoughts.

The Youth Summit was a great success. The day involved dancing, African drumming, art workshops, stress/anxiety workshops, guest speakers talking to us about their experiences, learning how to communicate/create new bonds with people. It involved getting to have our own perspectives on how our lives were impacted after covid. It was an amazing experience. I would love to do it again!

One of the great highlights of the Youth Summit was being able to hear Mike Rolls’ inspiring story. He had suffered from a disease in which he lost his legs and parts of his fingers. His story was extremely eye-opening, helping us learn how to overcome challenges with resilience. It was such an engaging and informative day with many different workshops such as dancing and African drumming. Teens from all different schools were able to have their voices heard about their struggles with Covid 19. Overall, it was an insightful experience.

I found the Youth Summit to be an engaging and informative experience. It was incredibly inspiring to hear guest speakers tell their stories and how they displayed resilience during difficult times. We took part in a number of entertaining and relaxing workshops and had the opportunity to have our voices heard in discussions regarding the effects that Covid-19 had on our lives. I made a number of new friends and overall found the Youth Summit to be a fun and valuable experience.

I found the youth summit to be very fun and full of new information. It was great to see other students from other schools and talk to them about their experiences with lockdown and covid and how they had been affected. The day involved a range of fun activities, from African drumming and hip hop to art therapy and different wellbeing workshops. We also had guest speaker, Mike Rolls, come and talk to us about how his life had changed and how he had to adapt. I would definitely recommend this to people that want to get their voices heard and make a change.

As a Year 9 student, I found the Youth Summit to be very informative and a great way to connect with our peers. After spending most of the last two years in constant lockdowns, many students my age could have trouble becoming more involved in the school community. The Youth Summit was an extraordinary event and I definitely recommend it to any student looking for interesting experiences!

The youth summit program was a useful as well as fun day for me. The day incorporated a lot of helpful information like how we could deal with issues involving mental health. We were able to properly discuss what it was like during the last few years of lockdown and how it affected us as well as what it interrupted. I liked how involving this event was and everyone there was really respectful of what we had to say. The workshops were interactive and interesting to participate in. This was a great day for student voice and an amazing experience.

The summit gave me a unique opportunity to listen to people’s life stories and their main messages. The peer activities allowed me to connect with others from different schools and voice our concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic and ways it had impacted us students. Throughout the day I had the chance to meet up with old friends from primary, adding more memories to a meaningful day. I highly recommend students to attend this wonderful event!
