Term 3 Wonder

TERM 3 WONDER

For most of us, sitting down to watch one of the many reality tv shows on our screens is one of our guilty pleasures.  We all marvel at the athleticism of the Ninja Warriors; we melt at the sight of the cute puppies receiving treatment at the Bondi Vet; and we all get hungry watching the Masterchefs at work.  Yet not often do we think of the more significant elements that go into these programs.

However, for the Year 7 & 8 students, that has been the focus of their project work for Wonder this term.  Each different group has been delving deep behind the scenes of these programs, investigating particular aspects in a more enriched manner.  For some it has meant looking at the design process of building a pavilion in one of Springvale’s open spaces.  Other groups are creating mini documentaries in the style of Big Brother.  Other groups are looking at what goes into our beauty products or designing a new range of clothing using recycled materials.

A number of these groups have also taken the opportunity to undertake fieldtrips to gather research which can be applied to their project.  In one case we had a canine companion join the class to discuss the role of pets in our well being. Other field trips are planned for the coming weeks and we will be sure to share photos of them once they have taken place.

For the Year 9 students the focus of their Wonder program this term has been on Personal Development.  Each week they have discussed different issues such as puberty, healthy relationships and vaping, just to name a few. They have had a number of guest speakers present their expertise to them in a range of different manners, including form the group PPF.

The Year 9s are working towards a Parent Forum evening on September 1.  They are planning all aspects of the evening and have invited a guest speaker to also attend.

For all year levels involved in the Wonder program it is clear to see that they are developing a wide range of skills that will be useful for them in a range of different situations long after they leave school.  It is wondrous to behold.
