College Student Leadership team - WAAM report

College Captains

This term has been hectic with all the activities that have taken place. We want to congratulate everyone for their active participation in school activities this term and encourage you to continue engaging in activities in the last two terms ahead. Coming up in Term 3, we are going to be having our annual Feast Day on the 8 August. Elli and I are super excited to be working with the class captains in the weeks leading up to Feast Day, and giving them a helping hand with organising their stalls for the day. Feast Day is one of the most important events at MSJ that really unites our Josephite college. We cannot wait to help make 2018’s Feast Day the best one yet.

We would also like to say on behalf of the WAAM team and College community a warm but temporary goodbye to Mrs Danielle Fairthorne as she welcomes a baby into her family's life. Blessings to you and your family during this precious time, as we will all miss you while you are home with your beautiful bundle of joy.

Wellbeing

This term has gone by so quickly with the Wellbeing portfolio putting on many events including Kahoot lunchtimes, club MSJ and a Year 7 netball competition, with the final being held this Wednesday the 27th as the two Year 7 McCormack teams will face off! We wish both teams the best of luck! There was also many successes in SCSA sports this term including the intermediate and senior hockey teams winning their division overall as well as the 47 students who competed in SCSA cross country, with multiple girls taking out places in the top three in all age groups. Congratulations to the MSJ champions of the event;  Junior - Amelia Vivera, Intermediate - Isabella Oraison and Senior - Comfort Kennedy.

Next term, the Wellbeing portfolio is hoping to put on even more fun and inclusive events including a dodgeball competition, AFL scarf day and in collaboration with other portfolios, we are hoping to run a mental health week creating awareness and understanding of a diverse range of mental issues with a range of activities including a comedy lunch, mind games and meditation. More information on this is to come.

I wish that all students and teachers have a relaxing and safe holiday period and come back feeling refreshed to start a new term full of wellbeing activities.

Academic

With Semester 1 coming to an end, students from Years 8-11 have completed their mid-year exams which calls for a great time to reflect on their goals and continue to pursue their new goals for Semester 2.

This term, we’ve also seen some great co-curricular involvement, particularly in areas of public speaking. A special congratulations to Tanvi Arora from 8 Solomon who competed in the 2018 Wynspeak Youth Public Speaking Competition earlier in the year and was one of 17 finalists out of over 80 competitors. The finals were held on Wednesday and the competition was fierce! Tanvi received one of three awards given for the Junior Section. Congratulations Tanvi!

Coming next term, the Academic portfolio will continue running weekly tutoring session to ensure students receive the best support – it was great to see many student use this opportunity for their exam preparations. After a successful Family Feud this term, stay tuned for more academic competitions that are coming up such as, “Have You Been Paying Attention?” and  more!

I hope that the holiday period provides some respite from the normal busyness of life and hope that students and staff return refreshed for the new term.

Arts

The impending end of this term has put the Arts team under the pump to carry out over 70 auditions for ‘MSJ’s Got Talent’. With such a large number of acts ranging from Taekwondo combinations to group comedy acts we hope that MSJ will get to experience a wide range of the talents with the grand finals taking place on the 8 August during our annual Feast Day. A big thank you to the Arts and Academic captains, Sport and Wellbeing captains and WAAM team members that have sat in on these auditions. And a big congratulations and good luck to all those girls who auditioned for MSJ’s Got Talent 2018!   The VET music students also performed at Kindred Studios in Yarraville, which was a wonderful event to showcase the talented musicians we have here at MSJ. Well done to all who performed.

Ministry

In recognition of refugee and asylum seeker week, the Ministry and Social Justice teams ran activities throughout the week to demonstrate our support for the refugees and asylum seekers who have fled or are fleeing their home countries. We made a banner displaying the words: “#WithRefugees” and encouraged students to put their handprints on the banner as a sign of solidarity. We also asked students to sign a petition started by the UNHCR to show their support and to stand #WithRefugees. Prayers and videos were also shown during morning pastoral classes throughout the week. We encourage the MSJ community to show love to our neighbours and welcome the stranger as Christ calls us to do.

Next term will be a busy one with Feast Day set for the 8 August. Feast Day celebrates Mary Mackillop’s Feast Day and the money raised will be going to Mary Mackillop International, an international aid and development organisation of the Sisters of St Joseph that focuses on developing education, health and livelihood in Timor-Leste, Peru and Papua New Guinea.
