Student Wellbeing

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

Term 2 has been a busy time for our community and members are worthy of a rest.  It is a great time for our students to rest, recharge their batteries and enjoy quality time with their families.  We are grateful for our students and their keenness and eagerness to engage with the fullness of College life.

Child Safe Team

Ms Kate Dishon, Mr Steven Mifsud, Mr Scott McNulty, Mrs Merrin Sulovski, Mrs Trish Stathakis,  (parent representative), Olivia Vella (Year 11) and Mia Paladino (Year 10) student representatives met last week to discuss our child safe practices.

We covered the following aspects of work:  No Way to Bullying Practices, Consent Workshops and our child safe audits that occur each semester. The team is keen to explore protocols around social media and procedures about electronic communication with our families.  If you have any ideas we would welcome your feedback.

A reminder that if you have any concerns about Child Safety please feel free to contact our Child Safe team on childsafety@msj.vic.edu.au

Living Arrangements/Court Orders/Family Orders. To best support your child the College needs to know of changes to addresses, living arrangements and telephone numbers. The Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing must be informed of any special circumstances that may affect a student.  If custody and access has been determined by court orders, then the original must be made available for our office to make a copy.

Tuning In to Teens

As part of our ongoing commitment to work in partnership with our parents we have negotiated with MacKillop Family Services to offer “Tuning into Teens.”  It is a free six week parenting course that will be offered at the College beginning on July 20th at 9.00am – 11.30am in the Wellness Centre.  The College can also provide free child care if it is needed.  If you are interested in attending please email: smifsud@msj.vic.edu.au

Tuning in to Teens Emotionally Intelligent Parenting is a program that helps parents to build strong relationships with their teenagers and enables them to communicate even in difficult times.

The six sessions cover:

Session 1            The foundations of emotion coaching teens

Session 2            Connecting and emotional acceptance

Session 3            Building intimacy and showing empathy

Session 4            Emotion Coaching adolescent worry and sadness

Session 5            Emotion Coaching and anger

Session 6            Emotion Coaching: now and in the future

Social Worker Students

In Semester Two the College is fortunate enough to have two Social Work students engaged in study at the College.  We are excited to announce that Emily Walker and Robert Nguyen will work with our Wellbeing Team and staff to further explore positive wellbeing strategies.

Cameron & Solomon Wellbeing Leader

Ms Clare Kubacki is taking long service leave and she will be replaced by Mrs Kelly Sexton.  If you have any concerns with your child at this time, please email her Learning Mentor Teacher and/ or Mrs Sexton at ksexton@msj.vic.edu.au

Uniform

As we have entered the Winter Season a number of students have not been wearing the uniform with pride.  I ask that you work with your child to ensure she is wearing the correct uniform on the right day and that her skirt length is to the knee.

Students are not to wear any clothing that is not part of the College uniform, as it will be confiscated.

Train Travel

The Seaholme/Altona/Westona train line upgrade continues We have been informed by Public Transport Victoria  that buses will replace trains on the Altona Rail Loop commencing Saturday June 16 and concluding Sunday July 29.  During this time, a replacement bus service will run between Laverton and Newport stations, stopping at Westona, Altona and Seaholme stations.

The replacement buses will collect passengers on Maidstone Street, therefore we have experienced additional road traffic congestion and ask parents speak to their children about road safety and alternate travel to the College.

Please be aware that some students who catch the Laverton train to Point Cook may now catch the Point Cook bus and this may create further crowding on the bus.  The College has contacted the bus companies to seek additional bus services, but this is not available.

For information about replacement bus services, visit the PTV website.
