Have Sum Fun

Year 7 and 8 Have Sum Fun

Twelve Year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to compete against other schools from Perth in the 2019 MAWA Math Have Sum Fun competition last Friday, March 22 at Trinity College.

The students included Joseph Abusman, Agna Aji, Alyssa Briggs, Syunei Lam, Jia Ying Chen, Minh (Kien) Nyugen, Saahir Karnam, Matthew Sanchez, Jeann Valdez, Jonathan Le, Sharie Fernadez and Taine Rangitoheriri. These young mathematicians have been coming to after school workshops for six weeks in preparation for the competition and were excited to show their mathematical might against the other schools.

The competition runs over four rounds and in each round the students in teams of six have 20 minutes to answer eight questions. Both teams did very well and finished on 16 and 13 answers correct out of a possible 32 questions with the winning team (All Saints College) scoring 25 out of 32. Students learnt a lot from the completion and most importantly, had sum fun doing so.

Year 9 and 10 Have Sum Fun

Congratulations to all students who participated so enthusiastically in the Mathematical Association of Western Australia’s ‘Have Sum Fun’ competition on Friday, March 22.

The competition is an exciting mathematics initiative that uses a quiz night format. Students in teams race against the clock to solve four intense rounds of challenging mathematics problems.

On the Friday evening from 7pm to 10pm, two teams in Years 9 and 10 battled against 33 others schools at All Saints’ College. Both teams competed well and demonstrated the St Norbert spirit.

Have Sum Fun Face to Face (Year 11-12)

After taking some time after school to work on previous years’ questions, a group of Year 11 and Year 12 students formed three teams at this year’s competition which took place at Trinity College on Friday March 15.

Dawn Saji, Ethan Li Woon Chung, Elsa Tan, Licia Benedict and Vivian Johnson were on Team A, Sanjita Ghimire, Dylan Wemyss, Aakash Neupane and Emereen Moratalla formed Team Alpha and Team One comprised Simran Shivnani, Aldric Ratnasekera, Yen Ngo and Selina Tan.

Suitably supplied with lollies, snacks and fruit, as well as calculators and freshly sharpened pencils, the teams pitted their wits against the fiendish questions about trains and fruit juice, GST, geometry and whatever else got thrown at them. With eight questions in each of the four 20 minute rounds everyone was kept busy and enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment as they managed to crack some of the more difficult questions.

In the end the three SNC teams finished creditably in the middle of the honours list with 19 correct answers, although some way from the 28 correct answers for the winning teams.

Congratulations to all the participants and a big thank you to their parents who delivered them to Trinity and collected them again so late on a Friday night.
