Here we are already in Spring. This is a great time to prepare your garden for your summer veggies. There is a lot happening in the garden as usual. Our new chickens are settling in and producing seven eggs a day, which is one per chook. Our students have fun with the chickens.  They have the opportunity to look after them in class time, the chickens are let out of their pen and the students check water, food and do a general cleanup of the pen.

Students from Years 2-4 have been asked to bring in their own gardening gloves, so they fit their little hands. Gloves can be purchased at Bunnings and are to be labelled with their name and put in a zip lock bag to leave in their classroom. I will still have extra gloves for our classes so no one misses out, but having their own gloves is always better.

Students have started planting potatoes in hessian bags, this technique worked really well last time. Potatoes are usually grown once the frost has lifted, as they do not like the cold. They are a root vegetable and the seed of the potato is the potato itself. The humble potato originated in South America and was introduced to Europe through Portugal and Spain. This activity is a great one to do at home and there are many ways to plant potatoes, students are encouraged to explore which method produces the most.

Happy Gardening!
