Junior School Highlights

Get organised, get involved, get focused

Junior school is currently focusing on the concept of community and it was so wonderful to see students in Years 7-9 strongly representing their houses at the Swimming Carnival. Many students got into the house spirit and dressed in their colours, while also being willing to get in the pool and participate, whether it be in the novelty events or the swimming competition.

Homework Help

Every Tuesday and Wednesday after school, tutors in key subject areas will be available in the library to assist students with their homework queries from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. It is highly recommended that students attend these sessions to get the most out of their learning and be on top of homework. The library is available as a quiet study space after school Monday-Friday.

GEC recommended homework time is:

Year 7 & 8: 30 to 45 minutes daily, 5 days a week.

Year 9: 45 to 90 minutes daily, 5 days a week.

Yarra Trams Safety Presentation

Yarra Trams are giving presentations to schools regarding safety around trams; Year 7 students will participate in this safety presentation in term 2.

Year 7 Highlights

The first term of High School is coming to an end and what an amazing experience it has been for the Year 7s so far!

Cultural awareness week was a huge success with students joining in many activities throughout the week including the Harmony day casual dress as can be seen in the photos!

Students also participated in the Swimming Carnival where standout performances went on to compete in the Divisional Championships. Matilda McIntyre, Natalie Peverell and Felix Dressel-De Bruyn were strong competitors in a range of swimming events, with Felix making it through to the Regional Championships!!! Poppy Burrage also did Glen Eira College proud in the diving!

Year 7 interschool sports day showcased not only how willing this cohort is to give anything a go, but how cooperative, respectful and well behaved they are. They should all be very proud of how they performed.

With the School Production, Cross Country, Athletics Day and the Year 7 Camp around the corner, there is still so much for students to get excited about!

Our Year 7 classes are continuing to be involved with all the school curricular activities. This year our production is The Wizard of Oz and we need many students to make this a successful event. Apart from the roles that you see on stage, we also need students to help with all the unseen activities that make the production a success. We asked our Year 7 students if they were interested in this task and we are very proud to say we had a great response. The following students will be helping:

Nina Gibbs 7A

Odelia Ashkar 7A

Harshitha Meenakshisundaram 7B

Isabella Mints 7B

Sholly Burstin 7C

Lynn Cheong 7E

Poppy Dry 7E

Lauren Gilfedder 7E

Hanako Gunton 7E

Thank you to all of those involved.

Year 8 Highlights

The Year 8 students have had a fabulous start to the year meeting their new teachers, and for some students, their new classmates. We welcomed many new students to GEC this term and are proud of their peers for making this a smooth and comfortable transition for them. On Tuesday 12th February, we were lucky enough to host a fully funded ‘Graffiti Prevention Through Life Skills’ Incursion from Warner Youth Services, thanks to the Glen Eira City Council. The students enjoyed the engaging presentation which provided them with resources, support contacts and information about creative projects and programs in the wider community.

On Friday 15th March many of our Year 8 students competed in Interschool Sports (Beachside Division). We had teams competing in volleyball, baseball, softball, lawn bowls and tennis. Our girls’ volleyball team just missed out on a place in the grand final of the round robin, while our lawn bowls team placed second and will progress to Southern Metro Regionals. We wish the lawn bowls team the best of luck!

We had further success with our boys’ baseball team, coached by Darcy Messenger of 9E, topping their competition for the day. We wish the team all the best and hope they beat their 2018 success of progressing to State. We are looking forward to celebrating even more sporting prowess during our Cross Country Carnival on the last day of term. We wish you all a safe and happy holiday.

Year 9 Highlights

There is a holiday opportunity for Year 9 girls to be involved in ‘Girls do Cyber’, which aims to increase the ratio of females in cyber-related jobs. It is a free event and students are welcome to see Ms Mathieson or Mr Hale for further details.

As usual the Year 9 Program has been incredibly busy with visits to Williamstown to learn from Sea Shepherd, an organisation to help protect, defend and conserve our oceans, to incursions held by such organisations as the  RSPCA and St Vincent de Paul's. Thanks to all Year 9 students whose behaviour, attitude and inquisitiveness on both incursions and excursions has been exemplary.

An honourable mention goes out to Haddi El Shorbagy who will be competing in the national athletic finals in javelin, discus and shot-put - good luck in Sydney! And to Sebastian Buley- Delanty who has reached the finals for Class Clowns 2019, a national secondary school comedy competition. Good luck and we hope to see you as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Key Messages in Junior School

  • Learning starts at 9am - We appreciate your efforts in working together to have students at school and ready to learn by 9am. This is paramount for the best learning to occur and to set positive habits in place for students’ futures.
  • Correct uniform - all students should be wearing the correct uniform. If there are queries about this, please refer to the uniform policy set out in the Student Planners.
  • Step outside your comfort zone - it is where the magic happens.
  • Attitude to learning - we all get to choose how we respond to situations in our life and learning is no different. Having a positive attitude to our learning will open many opportunities to take our learning further.
