Women in Defence High Tea - International Women’s Day 2019
I was honoured to attend the ‘Women in Defence High Tea’ with two Year 11 students, Zoe Markopoulos and Jeni Roitman at the Melbourne Museum on Friday March 8.
We heard from 3 leaders within the ADF, Lieutenant Nicole Grundy (Royal Australian Navy), Warrant Officer Class 2 Cindy Bowen (Australian Regular Army) & Wing Commander Fleur James (Royal Australian Air Force) about life in the ADF and balancing career with family. Afterwards recruitment officers were available to chat and answer our questions on recruitment and the enrolment process in the ADF.
"I found the High Tea Experience very informative and rewarding towards my general idea about the lifestyle, and requirements for the Navy, Army and Airforce. The speakers were able to answer all questions I had regarding issues such as deployment, mental health and recruitment criteria. Gender equality was talked about in great detail, how much the organisation has progressed within equality in all fields and how strong the community is. It was evident that the organisation provides the opportunity of a lifetime to work in the field that you desire and to form long-lasting family/friendships."
Jeni Roitman
Year 11
"As the defence force is an area I am strongly considering as a career, today was a wonderful opportunity to receive information and ask any questions I had. I thoroughly enjoyed the presentations from each of the guest speakers and I am almost settled on pursuing a career with the defence force."

Useful Tips for a University Degree Wannabe (UDW)
UDW: definition - a person who is convinced they want to go to University, but are not sure where or exactly what they want to study! Also suffers from ATAR anxiety.
- Choose a degree that allows some flexibility in selecting a sequence of units that is right for you
- Make sure the program offers opportunities for practical work experience (sometimes called Industry Based Learning)
- Do not base your decision solely on what your friends are doing
- LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! Make sure travel time from your residence to the campus is within what you are willing and able to do on a day to- day basis
- Get involved! Get out there and find out what the universities are offering by attending Open Days and asking questions!
- Do not just pick courses based on ATAR alone.

Defence University Sponsorship (DUS)
Whilst studying for a job-relevant degree at your choice of accredited university, join the Australian Defence Force (ADF), have your fees paid for, earn a salary while you complete your degree, and walk straight into a great ADF role following graduation.
Being awarded a Defence University Scholarship (DUS) means that a student can apply for a role in the Navy, Army or Air Force while still studying for a degree at any accredited university in Australia; join their chosen Service, then concentrate on their studies, while enjoying a salary and many other benefits.
In return for being paid to complete their degree course and having the rest of their fees covered, students will be expected to serve in the Navy, Army or Air Force. Typically, DUS recipients will be required to:
- complete one to four weeks of training each year during university holidays, and
- once they have graduated, DUS recipients will need to commit to full-time service for the number of years of university sponsorship plus one year (with a minimum of three years' service). So, if were sponsored for a 3-year degree, will owe 4-years of service.
For more information regarding the application process, the courses that qualify for sponsorship, and the roles university sponsorship can lead to, visit Defence University Sponsorship (DUS)
