Book Week Costume Day August 20th
As part of our celebration of literacy, we will be having a Book Week dress-up day. Students are encouraged to come to school as their favourite book character on August 20th. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a Book Week Costume Parade.
Kingswood Reading Challenge
The Kingswood Reading Challenge has landed! The reading challenge encourages students to read a range of books over Term 3 and record their efforts online using Google Forms.
Keeping a record of the books your child has read is important as there will be prizes for the students who read the most books, and prizes for the class that collaboratively reads the most books.
Updates regarding which grades and which students are reading the most books will be communicated weekly via Compass and at assemblies. Please see the Compass Post for more information or speak to your child’s classroom teacher.
Kingswood Writing Competition- winners will be announced on Compass on Monday, August 12th
If you could choose any one secret power, which one would it be? Would you choose super strength? The ability to fly? The power to read minds? Imagine you had super powers for one week. What would you do with them? How did they appear in the first place? Do you have a special superhero name?
We encourage all students to write a story about all the good things about their power and the problems it might cause during that week.
Does your child need ideas and inspiration?
Here is a great random superpower generator to help you along the way. It is suitable for students in year’s 4 to 6.

Children in Prep to Year 3 will need some help from their parents or carers to use the one below:

Students should submit their writing entries to their classroom teacher with their name and year clearly written. They may hand write or type their story but it must not be any longer than two A4 pages.
The best piece of writing from every class will be judged by a panel of staff to determine the prize awarded to the most entertaining Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 piece of writing.
Entries close on: Monday August 5th
The winners will be announced on Compass on Monday, August 12th.
Kingston Writing Festival
The winning piece of writing from each year level of our school competition will also be showcased at the Kingston Prep to Year 12 Network Writing Festival on Thursday, August 22nd. The student authors and their parents will be invited to attend the event and meet other student writers from our network.
Melbourne Writer Festival
Twenty Year 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to attend the Melbourne Writer Festival on September 3rd with Mrs Skiba and Miss Rohan. Keen and enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 writers have the opportunity to listen to authors talk about how they create and illustrate amazing stories.
The twenty lucky students will attend three masterclasses which will be held at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne.
The cost of attending the event will be $27 per student. The group will be going by public transport for free. Parents and carers will be responsible for organising drop offs and pick ups from Cheltenham train station where Mrs Skiba and Miss Rohan will be meeting the students.
To have the opportunity to attend this event students will need to submit an expression of interest letter (no longer than one A4 page) to Mrs Skiba by Wednesday, July 31st (date has been extended).
In their letter students should include:
- why they love writing and what they are trying to improve in their own writing
- who their favourite authors are
- which author or authors inspire them to write and why
- what they would like to gain from this experience.
The twenty students selected will then be given permission forms and further details regarding the event.
